Marc Benioff Says Trump Should Send Guard Troops to San Francisco
Marc Benioff, who once donated to Democrats, told @heatherknightsf.bsky.social that he thinks Trump should send the National Guard into San Francisco.
βI fully support the president,β he said. βI think heβs doing a great job.β

Can Mamdaniβs Energetic Campaign Be a Blueprint for Democrats?
You can cling to the idea that Iβm out to write a hit piece on Mamdani. That doesnβt make it true, sorry.
In fact, hereβs a story I wrote asking whether other Dems could learn from him. www.nytimes.com/2025/06/26/u...

Iβm simply replying to the criticism. Happy to engage with it, but some people are implying things about the story that just arenβt there!
And yes, I do think itβs good for public trust to engage.

Oof. Hard to say which of those was worse at this point

Missed this. You have a lot of criticisms, but will address 2:
-The reason for singling out the βtopβ filers is itβs a potential data point re maybe high-income individuals are leaving.
-Would have liked to include Tiffany! I had a quote from her but got cut for space. 2 other DSA ppl quoted.

You wouldnβt call Trump saying heβd deploy the National Guard βescalatingβ?

Yep, thatβs all I do, you nailed it. Great work.

Iβm sorry, I just donβt agree. There is certainly a pro-socialist sentiment, as evidenced by the city council members being elected! Thereβs backlash to them. The conflict is playing out as Portland has big problems, some depicted in photos. I donβt think itβs hard to grasp both of those things.
04.10.2025 21:57 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 6 π 0
Well, a lot of people have thoughts! Sorry to not get to everyone

I donβt agree. Nowhere in this story do we argue the socialists are responsible for Portlandβs problems, as people here seem to be suggesting.
04.10.2025 21:49 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 3 π 1
Well it is certainly intended to be Mamdani-themed. But why does that automatically make it sandbagging?
04.10.2025 21:21 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 5 π 3
I didnβt βstealβ their story. I got the idea from their great story, and went out and reported my own piece that led to my conclusions.
I also did credit them and link to them several times in the story, so now youβre just making things up. Sounds like something a disingenuous worm would do!
04.10.2025 21:17 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0
I think we make it clear that those things predate the socialists, and instead they make up the bulk of the debate now between the socialists and the moderates. But I take it you disagree.
04.10.2025 21:15 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 3 π 0
Not really. Now we are just splitting hairs.
04.10.2025 21:07 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 5 π 0
No, itβs that I think youβre wrong.
I donβt think this paints a scary picture of the city. It doesnβt depict Portland as a war zone. Itβs not designed to get anyone to vote one way or another.
What it does do is be honest that the city still has big problems, that both sides are grappling with.

I donβt cover Mamdani - I cover politics in the West.
Not meaning for it to be a scare piece. If anything, we suggest the handwringing over the socialists is somewhat overblown.
04.10.2025 21:01 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 2 π 0
Indeed it was, sorry if that doesnβt fit the ideal narrative.

04.10.2025 20:56 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 3 π 0
Right. The county has played a big role in keeping the pre-K program, despite the governorβs efforts.
I understand people feel itβs overstated, but:
βAlthough moderates are spooked by their talk of higher taxes and social housing β¦ the socialists have not yet tried to muscle through such policies.β
04.10.2025 20:55 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0
I disagree that it suggests thereβs something inherently wrong with it.
βThey argue that the dire rhetoric about them reflects the anxieties of an out-of-touch establishment, refusing to cede power to a younger generation focused on the working class.β
04.10.2025 20:52 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0
No problem. I just donβt think itβs particularly controversial to say that Portland is not a city chock full of Republicans. I was explaining why various factions on the left - including the DSA - play a big role.
As opposed to, say, Phoenix or Salt Lake City or something
04.10.2025 20:51 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 5 π 2
Okay, but look at it another way: One quote from a moderate council member, one quote from a business leader. Two quotes from the socialist councilors. I feel like I kept it pretty balanced, if we are just tallying who is there and who isnβt.
