I lived in Vancouver during the Canada Line construction + opening, and Toronto for the Eglinton Line construction + opening, so this is not abstract to me

The idea here was that the Eglinton Line was so expensive and took so long to build (including disruption to businesses) that it would make more sense the do the faster, cheaper, more disruptive Canada Line approach, and you could easily compensate businesses with the savings

Yeah, I am sympathetic to the businesses, but a good faith payout to compensate for lost business makes a lot more sense than tunneling for much longer and much more money
