A smallish brown bird has short dark brown tail feathers, it may be regrowing the tail feathers lost by fright molt due to a very close call with a predator. The bird is standing on a concrete patio with its back to us while looking to the right.

Usually California towhees have a magnificent tail but this one is short. May have had a bout with fright molt 🤷‍♂️ It got a few mealworms to help with the tail feathers 😄
