So yes, everybody should treated equally by the law and in basic dignity.

And no, everybody doesn't need to be treated equally by YOU in accessing your time, attention, and emotional availability.

Remember this, and protect your peace.

It does NOT make you a bad person to do this.

It is NOT hypocritical.

Any claim otherwise is an attempt to prey on and exploit your basic empathy by weaponizing a generic statement that sounds good on surface level.

Your emotional energy is yours to distribute as you want to whom you want.

This is a situation where no, you do NOT have to treat them equally.

You can spend all the time and energy you want supporting your friend, and you are not required to give the other person an equal amount of effort out of some twisted interpretation of "fairness".

Example: Two people say they're dealing with Things.

One is your friend you've had many deep, personal conversations with.

The other is someone who has repeatedly said cruel things about you & your appearance, and has attempted to directly hurt your friends, their jobs, and livelihoods repeatedly.

But, there are many contexts where you do not, in fact, have to treat people "equally".

You do not have to give everybody equal time or equal energy.

You do not owe people affection or attention because you've given it to other people.

Also a place everybody should be treated equally: Being afforded basic fundamental human rights.

No person deserves to be a slave to another person. Nobody is entitled to torture another person just because.
You don't get to kill somebody just because you feel like it.

In other words: If two people were, to say, cross the street outside of a crosswalk at the exact same spot and time, either they're both jaywalkers or neither of them are. They should either both get a citation, or nobody should.

That's being treated equally by the law.
