What’s missing is an explicit alliance: a defensive and economic partnership prepared to protect democracy and citizens if the federal government turns rogue.

-Band together in interstate compacts to negotiate as a bloc.
-Refuse participation in some federal programs (with trade-offs).
-Use political pressure & public organizing to make cuts costly.

2. States can fight back in other ways:
-File lawsuits against the federal gov for unconstitutional cuts.
-Adjust state budgets or issue bonds to “backfill” withheld funds.
-Create tax credits/deductions to offset federal burdens.

1. Federal income tax goes straight to the IRS, employers withhold it and individuals file directly. States aren’t intermediaries, so they can’t block or reroute those payments.

Yes blue states should withhold- problem is that’s between individuals and their tax preparer- it’s not on CA and NY leadership to do. Ultimately the penalties will be levied on the individuals who don’t pay federal taxes.

If someone here is smart and can suggest a way around this, we’re all ears.

California and New York paying taxes to this federal government in 2025 is tantamount to England and France paying taxes to Germany in 1940.
