The long-period seismicity reveals fluid flow along the caldera fault system, which led to failure and subsequent magma migration. GNSS data indicate no pressurization of a shallow sill following the earthquake, and capture time correlated sill deflation and magma intrusion to the eruptive fissures.

We combined analysis of long-period microseismicity with high-rate GNSS data to study the period between a Mw5.4 earthquake and the onset of magma migration and eruption.

In 2025, the AWI and University of Bremen secured extensive data sets from the USA. Now, the @dfg.de has approved around €860,000 in funding to systematically identify endangered data and secure it for the long term with the help of the PANGAEA data platform. β˜οΈπŸ“Š

Photo of the Day: The #volcano complex Kaiserstuhl is situated in the south west of Germany near the city of Freiburg. It is one of the most interesting #volcanoes in Germany and for example there are rare rocks similar to the #volcano Ol Doinyno Lengai.

Still smiling after another amazing visit to Yasur volcano in Vanuatu just over a week ago. We were there to help VMGD install new infrasound microphones in their monitoring network, a vital tool for tracking eruptive activity.

A nice part of Earth (in Canada). A flattish (glacially eroded) small island of granite sits on a still lake reflecting a blue sky dotted with clouds. Two people stand at either end, fishing.

It’s Earth Day, and some of us have spent not just our careers but our whole lives loving + studying the Earth. It is not an easy time. But I hope you take a moment today to look at something beautiful, eat something delicious, squish someone you love, pet a dog, remember the nice parts. Yay Earth.

Two years ago today was one of the most thrilling moments of my life when I captured this sunrise eruption of Guatemala's VolcΓ‘n de Fuego. My drone was much closer than I realized, and the eruption was the largest I saw in my two days up there. I may never again film something as remarkable as this:
