Borders are imaginary lines drawn across real places; wildlife, weather, toxins and greenhouse gases flow across them endlessly. I once rafted down the Rio Grande where it's an international border, and it's not a border, it's a river where things converge and cactus wrens dart from shore to shore.

I'm still in Reno post-SPE. My flight Sunday was canceled at midnight, which meant I didn't get to a hotel until 1:30am. The next flight out is tonight and has already been delayed, which means I may miss my second flight to Boston. On the bright side, I actually rested yesterday.

Rep. Ayanna Pressley walks out during Trump speech in protest:

“I attended this joint session tonight to honor my guest Claire, a former HUD employee who was unjustly terminated as part of Elon Musk and Donald Trump’s unprecedented and unlawful attacks on our federal workers. Federal workers like her make our communities stronger, and I was proud to uplift their experiences by having Claire as my distinguished guest tonight.

“However, I could not in good conscience sit through this speech and give an audience to someone who operates with lawless disregard for Congress and the people of this nation. Donald Trump has used his bully pulpit to spread lies, demonize vulnerable communities, and double down on the hurt, hate, and harm in his first 43 days in office. He does not respect Congress as a co-equal branch of government, and he has spent his time in office attacking our communities and letting an un-elected, unaccountable billionaire ransack our federal agencies and gut the essential services our families depend on—all to enrich themselves and their billionaire friends.

“This speech was just a reminder of that. It was chilling.

“I remain squarely focused on my constituents, our community, and working to do everything I can to stop this Republican majority from making horrific cuts to Medicaid, halting cancer research, and attacking our dedicated federal workers.”

I walked out.

I am so tired of these billionaire boys and their grubby little hands grabbing at everything.

Elon Musk, hands off our democracy.

Welcome to my biomaterials danceroom. It may look like a darkroom, but it's uses are much more diverse just like this Jewish, Peruvian-Born, Gender Queer, Pansexual, Neurodiverse Mainer. This is my space (also I miss myspace). #queerspace #artstudio #creativespace #safespace

Good morning!

It’s day 11 of #RadicalizingMySheep & you know what? It took all of about 6 seconds to convince them that the people who live & work here & make up our communities should be treated with respect & appreciation. After all, they love fresh food. Also basic human rights & decency.

ynicism is first of all a style of presenting oneself, and it takes pride more than anything in not being fooled and not being foolish. But in the forms in which I encounter it, cynicism is frequently both these things. That the attitude that prides itself on world-weary experience is often so naïve says much about the triumph of style over substance, attitude over analysis.

Maybe it also says something about the tendency to oversimplify. If simplification means reducing things to their essentials, oversimplification tosses aside the essential as well. It is a relentless pursuit of certainty and clarity in a world that generally offers neither, a desire to shove nuances and complexities into clear-cut binaries. Naïve cynicism concerns me because it flattens out the past and the future, and because it reduces the motivation to participate in public life, public discourse, and even intelligent conversation that distinguishes shades of gray, ambiguities and ambivalences, uncertainties, unknowns, and opportunities. Instead, we conduct our conversations like wars, and the heavy artillery of grim confidence is the weapon many reach for.

I'm exhausted by all the people out there who are trying to prove they're each the most cynical world-weary disillusioned person who's not gonna ever do a fucking thing ever except dump on everything and expect to be admired for that. Wrote about that in 2016:
