An investigation last year by Groundwork Collaborative, Consumer Reports and More Perfect Union found that Instacart, a grocery delivery service, was secretly employing AI pricing software to conduct hidden price experiments on consumers. The report found price discrepancies between consumers could leave some families paying up to $1,200 more a year.

A picture of a grocery cart in the produce department at a store. A pair of hands ties a knot in the top of a bag of onions. Below is text reading "Seattle Times WA law makers consider bill to end retail surveillance, surge pricing By Shauna Sowersby January 22, 2026"
If youβve never heard of surveillance pricing or surge pricing, you are not alone. But both practices have crept into retail operations, leading lawmakers in Washington state to take action this legislative session. House Bill 2481, sponsored by Rep. Mary Fosse, D-Everett, and a host of other House Democrats, aims to rein them in.
Surge pricing refers to retailers changing the price of a product based on demand. Surveillance pricing, on the other hand, involves companies collecting consumer data to build individual profiles and using AI to set personalized prices depending on the consumer.Β
Imagine youβre at the grocery store with a friend. You buy the same item, but companies have collected data about you and your shopping habits, so you end up paying more than your friend. The difference may not be huge, but it is noticeable, and it can add up.
Stop the price gouging in grocery stores. Tell your State Representative to support HB 2481 today!

A grey toned slide with text: Why you should be paying attention to Pricing Experiments. Based on the average variations we say, for a household of 4, these hidden price shifts could mean a difference of about $1,200 more a year on groceries.
If grocery corporations get their way, a typical household in would pay $1200 per year MORE in groceries, according to an investigation from Consumer Reports. HB 2481 will stop this price gouging at grocery stores. Tell your state rep to support HB 2481 today! app.leg.wa.gov/districtfind...

Over 100 pharmacists, therapists, social workers, nutritionists, and more at Confluence Health Hospital voted to join UFCW Local 3000 earlier this month, expanding the ranks of healthcare workers at the hospital organized with the union. This new bargaining unit brings the total number of UFCW 3000-represented staff to over 550 healthcare workers.
βWeβve been coming together to form a union because we want better wage transparency, protections for what we already have and improvements for equity and patient safety, and an overall stronger voice for respect on the job,β said Trevor Schultz, a pharmacist and one of the workers at Confluence Health Hospital who helped lead the drive to get a union.
βWeβre looking forward to the next step of bargaining a first contract,β said Schultz. βThis will not only help us as workers, but also improve patient care. Weβre also excited to join the other 450 Confluence Health Hospital workers who are already members of UFCW 3000.β

A picture of a meat department self-serve shelves. Below is the text: Forbes How Grocery Clerks Are At The Center of the Food Affordability Crisis. By Errol Schweizer, Monday, November 24, 2025.
Grocery clerks and cashiers are at the heart of the food affordability crisis. Many of their customers canβt afford enough good food or are trading down to lower quality or more processed items. And as essential workers, clerks and cashiers are typically paid far below living wages, especially as food inflation has outpaced real wage growth. Like their customers, essential grocery workers are making difficult choices to feed their families and communities, and many are hungry for the holidays.
Cynthia Hernandez is Customer Service Clerk at Ralphs in South Los Angeles. βThe emotional toll is visible and real. I have seen customers become visibly distressed and even break down in tears at the checkout when they realize they cannot afford the food they need.β
βWhen the SNAP benefits stopped, it was an immediate shock to my budget. As a single mother with three children, that assistance is a critical part of my ability to buy groceries each month,β Cynthia Hernandez explained.
This isnβt just affecting individuals but entire families and communities. Cynthia is also supporting her 65-year-old mother, who is a SNAP recipient and also had her benefits cut. When Cynthiaβs benefits were restored, they were stretched to cover two households.
A study of Kroger employees in 2022 revealed that over 75% faced food insecurity. While many employees have fought for and won wage gains, costs of living increases eclipsed their victories.
"Affordability crisis" is a nice way to describe corporations hiking prices for profits while the politicians they bought cut food and health benefits. Join our Fresh Food for All campaign to organize and fight back!
