Well, value is relative. There must have been some assets in the TG Jones portfolio that the new owners felt would be worth something. I don’t think they had any intention of turning it around as a profitable business.

This bit in the From Russia With Love game made me laugh out loud. You've got a fairly grounded, low key fight based on the one in the movie, then the most video game looking fucker of all time slides into frame.

I think the strategy there was “don’t bother doing anything fancy with the rebrand, most of these stores will be closing next year after we’ve siphoned off everything valuable”

I’d likely have had the Saturn, as we had had nothing but Sega consoles up til that point. Even as a PlayStation teen, Daytona, Virtua Fighter and Sonic Jam were tempting!

Timing is everything; it was just too late to have any impact since everyone knew the Saturn was coming. I imagine an alternate history where the 32X appeared a year earlier and the Neptune made it into production…

This is how operators on the continent did it years and years ago. Memories of having to have my ticket clipped by a yellow machine before boarding a train in Italy, or the conductor would fine you!

Would be interesting to see how they’ve calculated this level of fraud. If their metric is “tickets sold but not scanned” compared with “tickets refunded as unused”, there has to be a variable for how they decide what percentage is fraudulent.

Four CDs from the original 90s series of Gladiators

Afternoon #Gladiators crew! I thought I’d dig out my classic series CD collection - there’s the official soundtrack for the first two series, and a couple of single releases. The albums have all of the event themes, plus the arena rock songs from the likes of Queen and Thin Lizzy. 😁

Wikipedia famously gives zero fucks about spoiler warnings though. Those character rundowns often say “Bob (Joe Bloggs), the chief navigator in season 2 who replaces Alice after her horrible demise”

This instant one would probably have more sugar, but if you make basic porridge (oatmeal) it’s very healthy - it’s mostly complex carbohydrates and fibre which take a long time to digest compared to breakfast cereals. And you can add anything to it, like fruit or honey for flavour.

They evoke the old Amiga demoscene and their music was amazing too, I get nostalgic for several of the menu themes from the OPM demos!

Oh you know the worst thing recently? It's typing the name of a character into Google and having the first search suggestion be "[character] death scene". All I wanted to know was who played them! 😡

Also seen in Mario Land 2, you can wander right up to Wario’s castle on the map screen at the start but you don’t have any coins.

It’s interesting how Gen 1 relies on a lot of genre conventions (like event flags, or even just turn-based combat) that are clear to people who’ve played a lot of RPGs, but its target audience may not have experienced them at all and it doesn’t really make allowances for that until later gens.

I've never been to a Gladiators taping, but I have been to see Michael McIntyre's Big Show being recorded! We were at the Christmas special back in 2019 (in November of course) - things on stage go roughly as they do on TV but all the live music acts are recorded twice to get a range of angles!

Michael McIntyre heralds the end of another round of Gladiators, but I'll be back next week for the last quarter-final!
