I know a certain spiny lizard is now back in the news but I hope you guys haven't forgotten about Haolong dongi.
Shoutout to this guy for showing us that dinosaur integument was weirder than we thought.

This digitally painted piece honors the survivor spirit of the coyote by tracing its lineage from the first cells of life to the animal trotting our landscapes today. Below the horizon, carefully chosen ancestors mark pivotal moments in adaptation, each contributing to the form and survivor we see today. Above the horizon, Coyote stands alert at the center, framed by both Denver’s skyline and a mountain backdrop, symbols of their ability to thrive in cities as well as wilderness. Embedded in the ground are the skulls and bones of carnivores whose lineages ended long ago, emphasizing Coyote’s persistence in contrast.

Since Haolong was unleashed to the public everyone's been drawing this poor little guy being hunted by Yutyrannus, but according to some reliable sources (@fbertpaleo.bsky.social) it would have been pretty hard for any predator to actually munch on this spiky iguanodontid.

I am overwordly excited -and still in total disbelief- to announce that I was awarded the prestigious 2025 #MSCA by @horizoneu.bsky.social 😱

I will join Dr. Araùjo at @istecnico.bsky.social in Portugal to work on a cutting-edge methodology to address endothermy in dinosaurs and pterosaurs.

Spiny little friend.

A quick doodle of Haolong dongi, a newly described ornithopod from China with... spikes. Numerous sharp spines grew from the animal's neck and back, seemingly different from all other known dinosaur integuments. Definitely wasn't on my bingo card for 2026 dinosaur finds!

The tail, similar to the Middle Jurassic Kulindadromeus, is covered in overlapping large scales, diminishing in size moving towards the end of the tail.

As the name suggest, this new dinosaur species exhibits new integumentary structures never seen before in these dinosaurs, a wide array of small, medium and -relatively- large spikes on the body except of the tail.

The paper is published in @nature.com Ecology and Evolution. I wish to thank Huang Jiadong, Pascal Godefroit and the rest of the Chinese team to have included me in this amazing project, I have now TWO DINOSAURS species on my list!

The specimen AGM 16793 is housed at the Anhui Geological Musem. The name means “The Spiky Dragon of Dong Zhiming” in honor of the recently passed Chinese paleontologist.

The specimen, almost complete, is a juvenile iguanodontian from the Yixian Formation of the Barremian (125 Mya).
