I want to thank you for keeping federal science funding strong. The senate appropriations committee endorsing NIH budget increases is a bright spot, and I’m grateful for your support of research and the innovation it fuels here in Alabama and across the country. But I’m very concerned about the other ways that science continues to be targeted. For example, NIH’s shift to paying out full 5-year grants upfront. This change will dramatically reduce the number of new grants funded next year. Our scientists are already facing success rates as low as 5–10%. This payout change means we may be looking at 1–2 funded grants out of every 100 applications. That would be devastating—not just to research careers, but to progress in medicine, healthcare, and technology. Please continue to support strong, sustained federal research funding—and urge NIH to protect long-term stability in the way those dollars are administered. Joining Democrats in voting yes were Minority Leader Brad Jones (R-North Reading), First Assistant Minority Leader Kimberly Ferguson (R-Holden), Third Assistant Minority Leader David Vieira (R-Falmouth), Hannah Kane (R-Shrewsbury), Donald Wong (R-Saugus), and unaffiliated Susannah Whipps (U-Athol).

Yesterday, the MA House joined the MA Senate in voting to strengthen the state’s shield law that protects the right to abortion care and gender-affirming care.

The vote was 136 to 23.
