There's something deeply obscene and broken about the fact that Donald Trump and Pete Hegseth are bombing elementary schools in an illegal war of aggression, and there's still a sense among the opposition that it has to be explained in terms of gas prices in order to get American voters to care.

a digital collage with a pink, purple, green, yellow, and teal gradient overlaid on all the images. the images include a horse carrying a bucket, a cluster of mushrooms, a grub, a birds talon, a cicada, five spiders, two flower buds, a hand with an eye over the back of it, and a microscope slide of atoms. there is white text that reads "get weirder or die miserable." the background is black and there is a slightly grainy texture

There is no sense in which a chatbot can "help" with your schoolwork by making it easier; if it is easier, it is less useful for actual learning (effortful practice is HOW WE LEARN) and therefore the chatbot has not helped, but has only hindered.

I understand why chatbot cheating happens but every time I read about it I want to gently remind everyone that the point of schoolwork is not for the submission to exist. Teachers are not just greedy for more essays or solved equations. The point is to do the work WITH YOUR OWN BRAIN, FOR LEARNING.

I'm happy I finally have time time to feature the "Tales from the Frontier" comic, seen in #StarfleetAcademy's "Come, Let's Away".😊 I have assembled all the pages seen in the episode but as a special gift, here's the cover and back page of the comic, provided to me by its designer: Stu Pearce! 🧵 1/4

Bluesky is not the commons. Twitter is not the commons. You can’t have a privately held commons. That’s not what words mean

Twitter is owned by a fascist who deliberately manipulates the algorithms to promote far right messages. Here’s why Bluesky has an intellectual diversity problem.

My workplace has lots of flexibility for remote work - only one day a week where everybody is generally in-person together. I am able-bodied and sometimes wish we had more opportunities to casually collaborate irl, but overall this reminds me I’m glad it’s more accessible to more folks.

something abled people don't get is you can have just one day a week where you are too sick to work, and that's enough to disqualify you from nearly all full-time jobs. it doesn't take a lot

people just assume disability and chronic illness mean you are the same kind of disabled every day. that couldn't be further from the truth. and we have an employment system designed with very little flexibility in that regard

China’s carbon curve may be bending at last It’s worth pausing on the point that the world’s largest source of climate pollution is no longer growing relentlessly.

"[China] has been deploying more renewables and battery storage than the rest of the world combined. Carbon dioxide emissions went down in almost all the big sectors last year, including transportation — where EVs are taking over — and power generation."

Scientists recently observed menopause in chimpanzees too! Which has complicated the previous leading explanation for menopause, the grandmother hypothesis.

Found an additional graphic that gets even more of these quotes together.

I've kept "I hate myself, I hate clover, and I hate bees" pinned above my desk since I first started studying evolutionary biology as an undergraduate. So relatable to get extremely frustrated with your study system.
