A tan background with gray and brown squares features an image of a young white woman with long dark brown hair smiles at the camera. She wears a light pink cardigan, and stands in front of a building with gray siding. A brown neuron sits at the top of the page above teal script reading “Emily Lapomardo” and brown text reading, “Emily is a queer disabled writer and educator from the Boston area. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in English from the University of Massachusetts Amherst, and is currently pursuing a Master of Arts in English from Bridgewater State University. She believes in the power of advocacy, and showing up authentically in all areas of life. In her free time, she enjoys reading literature and raging against the patriarchy.”
A tan background features a teal neuron and brown text reading, “Emily loves a wide array of stories and forms when reading. She is drawn to poetry, especially poems that provide new perspectives. Any work that has a turn she didn’t see coming is an immediate favorite, as well as poems with lines so profound they linger in her mind for days. Outside of poetry, she enjoys fantasy novels with rich world-building, or historical fiction novels that expertly blend historical facts with compelling narrative. Regardless of genre, she always appreciates writing that employs identity as a means of authentic representation rather than a plot device.”
Meet our spring 2026 editorial staff! Emily Lapomardo is a queer disabled writer and educator who appreciates writing that employs identity as a means of authentic representation rather than a plot device. Read more about Emily and what she’s hoping to find in our submissions!

A yellow background features an image of a pixie haired woman wearing round glasses and a cream-colored sweater smiling in a brightly lit forest. The logo for the University of Pittsburgh rests at the top of the page followed by black text reading, “Discovering Disabled Forms and Structures Writing Workshop with Sarah Fawn Montgomery Friday, February 27, 2026 from 2-3:30pm EST. The writing workshop is a space where power and privilege often demand disabled, chronically ill, and neurodivergent writers translate their lived experiences for abled audiences in order to be valued. Embodying ableist expectations is an act of erasure that injuries disabled spirits and silences disabled stories. But turning to disabled bodies and minds can be a source of great inspiration and innovation. In this interactive workshop, Sarah Fawn Montgomery will share strategies from Nerve: Unlearning Workshop Ableism to Develop Your Disabled Writing Practice, as well as her recent essay, “Medical Intake for Your Suffering,” to help writers discover disabled forms and structures for creative work. She will then lead participants through a short, low-stakes writing exercise (with no requirement to share) to consider various disabled forms and structures they might employ in their work, encouraging participants to reflect on how and why this approach to writing might tend to both their bodies and bodies of work. This event is part of "Creating a Culture of Access" programming, sponsored by The Writing Institute. Registration is required and can be done through the QR code or by visiting The Writing Institute website. Access questions and requests can be directed to Jessie Male at jem496@pitt.edu.” A QR code sits at the bottom of the page.
Our editor-in-chief @sfmontgomery.bsky.social is presenting a Zoom writing workshop on “Discovering Disabled Forms and Structures” on Friday, February 27 from 2-3:30pm EST with The Writing Institute at the University of Pittsburgh! The workshop is free and open to all!

A tan background features gray and pink boxes and image of a young white woman with long brown hair wears a black dress and smiles at the camera while standing outdoors near a pond and a green lawn. A gray neuron rests at the top of the page and pink script reads “Raquel Desiree DeGrasse.” Black text reads, “Raquel Desiree DeGrasse is a writer and graduate student from Massachusetts pursuing her MA in English at Bridgewater State University. She writes about memory, family, and the way people carry their past with them. She’s drawn to stories that feel honest and emotionally vulnerable, and that find meaning in ordinary moments. When she’s not reading or writing, she enjoys baking and cake decorating, the first long warm spring day, and debriefing about life with her fiancé.”
A tan background features a black and pink Nerve to Write logo and black text reading “Raquel is drawn to writing that lingers on meaning. Stories and poems that let small details carry weight, like a single image or symbol that can be returned to again and again. If a blueberry bush is mentioned, she will find out why. She loves work that invites reflection and emotion. Vulnerability is intimidating but so important.”

Green, tan and brown squares make up a background that features a brown neuron along with an image of a young white woman with bangs and long, dark brown hair smiling at the camera. She wears a light grey shirt with ruched sleeves and stands in front of a red, wooden railing with bright green trees in the background. Green scripted text reads “Cassidy Rousseau” and dark brown text reads, “Cassidy Rousseau an English educator from the Boston area. She is currently a graduate student pursuing her MAT for teaching Secondary English at Bridgewater State University. After a long day of teaching and creating lessons that engage all types of learners, she enjoys reading a twist-filled mystery novel and failing miserably at knitting.”
A tan background features a green neuron and dark brown text that reads,” Cassidy enjoys diving into genres she’s unfamiliar with, always open to reading stories that she may have overlooked in the past. She is especially drawn to stories that can only be described as having a “tangible atmosphere”, completely immersing the reader in the environment through its evocative images and complex characters. While Cassidy is most particularly drawn to mysteries, she looks for stories that have such intentional word choice and imagery that the reader can’t help but feel the sensations of the narrator, no matter how uncomfortable it may be.
Meet our spring 2026 editorial staff! First up is Cassidy Rousseau, an English educator from the Boston area who looks for evocative images and complex characters. Read more about Cassidy and what she’s hoping to find in our submissions!
