Can there be Sustainable AI Futures? Our project takes an interdisciplinary approach to AI and the environment, across Bath Spa, Sussex, Goldsmiths, UCD & UvA, & funded by UKRI. Sustainable AI Futures is a BRAID Responsible AI Demonstrator.

17.02.2026 10:47 β π 0 π 1 π¬ 0 π 0Will AI save the planet? Why the evidence is flawed Published: December 17, 2024 4.29am AEDT Author Jo Lindsay Walton Principal Research Fellow in Arts, Climate and Technology, University of Sussex Disclosure statement Jo Lindsay Walton has received funding from Innovate UK and the Arts and Humanities Research Council for research relating to this article. View all partners DOI https://doi.org/10.64628/AB.up77c9pwh Share article Print article Optimistic advocates for AI say this environmentally costly technology will become more sustainable with time. We can use AI more efficiently, and explore less energy-intensive designs inspired by the human brain. We can build data centres more sustainably, using wood or low-carbon concrete and steel. The heat from the data centres can warm homes in the local area. Of course, if we start using AI systems too widely (including where we donβt really need them), the growth might outweigh any of these potential gains in efficiency. But recently, Iβve been hearing another argument: that AI itself is tackling climate change. AI can help to model wildfires, optimise energy consumption to stabilise the grid, accelerate the development of low-carbon materials, and much more.
Similarly: others like @jowalton.bsky.social have noticed the evidence underpinning 'AI for climate' claims can be oddly weak, regardless of what type of AI is being used - eg, this article that ended up being retracted for using misleading references

OKAY BIG ONE FOR YA
NEW report out today: I dig deep into how big tech has been muddling tech types and overstating evidence to claim "AI" will make global emissions drop like a stone....
Not only will it not, it seems to be verifiably doing the opposite!!

"It doesnβt especially matter how the carbon impact of AI relates to the carbon impact of buying a hamburger or watching some television
It matters how it relates to the amount of carbon in the atmosphere, and our options for getting to net zero rapidly, safely, and justly"

This is a little dated now ('things move so fast" etc.) but you'll probably still find some things there you won't see anywhere else. It's a bit of a prequel to our current project Sustainable AI Futures. (Special thanks to Greenpixie and Innovate UK).
