By doing so, they will hopefully breed in themselves a curiosity to stretch their wings, and see what they can do outside of what guides and tutorials can give. But given modern trends of shortening attention spans, and AI, I’m worried that the creativity to explore won’t be maintained.

There will be stand-out artists from traditional, college educated backgrounds, but that’s not the majority of artists; most people aren’t pursuing an arts degree, and so will do the craft as a hobby, or as a “side hustle”. The hope is that they will earnestly engage with the art.

I use “codified” loosely, as it still is dynamic (kemono vs western Anthro vs mixes between traditional and Anthro), but it seems like furry art as a whole is becoming more are more same-y.

Tbh, I think to some degree furry as art is interesting in multiple facets. It’s been enabled heavily by the internet offering cheap/free resources to encourage artistic development, but those centralized resources have created a “codified” style.

Tbh there’s a lot of smaller think pieces about furry art as a movement/subculture! The issue is that it’s primarily in small online spaces, and the ones that break outside of those become silly drama usually.

(Might just be because I read Dungeon Meshi recently), but I feel like if you genuinely, truly love something, the best way to appreciate it is to dissect it, examine it, find what parts of it you find beautiful, and consume it. Allow it and its aspects to become part of something you create.

Sadly, I think there is an audience of people out there who have the fixation, but due to a lack of money/unwillingness to spend money, don't commission. But I think that's a skill issue tbh. Even if your art sucks ass, if there is an unfilled niche, the best way to tackle it is to make it yourself.

To be fair, AI bros wouldn't be able to tell what art was if it ran em over. They're more focused on a mainstream, sellable product over actually good art. Art that interrogates, poses interesting question. Even art that's a particular person's fixation. That's not really something they acknowledge

Identity is such a messy, complicated thing, and it's always interesting to understand how subcultures and identities can be expressions of aspects of the human condition, and how those aspects can be interrogated relative to what is considered "normative" society.

Genuinely! I am not therian myself, but I have body dysphoria, and find a deep anthropological interest in how Therians exists relative to human social structures. Would be interesting to study how perceived animal behaviors/actual animal behaviors/dissonance with humanity interact!
