π Policy solutions? We recommend:
Recognizing traditional controlled burns
Strengthening volunteer community fire brigades
Implementing multi-scale governance strategies
When it comes to managing fire, we found three main approaches:
β
Top-down suppression (gov-led control)
β
Community-based suppression (local response)
β
Community-led fire management (integrated solutions)
Using Q methodology, we worked with 56 participantsβQuechua farmers, firefighters, researchers, nonprofits & government officialsβto map out their perspectives. π
π Key insights:
-Some view fire as a threat to biodiversity & climate.
-Others see it as a complex toolβboth beneficial & risky.
π₯ Fire is a vital tool in tropical subsistence agriculture, but as climate conditions shift, so do fire risks. We analyzed how different stakeholders perceive fire & what they see as effective management solutions.
