Fallout continues from one of the most appalling cases of scientific misconduct I've ever come across: journal retracts 138(!) case studies as fictional. (Incredibly, it may have to un-retract one that is not fake.)

It’s mind-boggling that they actually did this! I’m completely appalled. Here we are in other fields assuming we should be honest in our scholarship, but researchers on CHILDREN’S HEALTH feel fine just making stuff up.

4. Then, we moved on to recently written texts that are structured as romance readers expect—the YA Hearts Unbroken by Cynthia Leitich, Danica Nava’s two: The Truth According to Ember and Love is a War Song. We are on the first of those.

3. Then, we started Native written romance novels, beginning with the oldest (1927) Cogewea, by Mourning Dove. Then we read the first of the contemporary era (2014) Evangeline Parsons Yazzie’s Her Land, Her Love. But neither of those is structured as we expect romances to be today. Plus, not spicy.

2. Then, I covered MMIWP and sexual violence in colonization. Then, we read the most stereotypical romance I could find—The Comanche Vampire. How does one satisfy a fetish for Indian warriors from the 1800s? You make him a vampire. That author has some serious issues.

1. Fun fact—more representations of Natives occur romance novels written by white women for white women than in any other medium. Finally, there are enough Native written romances to have a semester long course. I started with lecturing on stereotypes of Native people in American pop culture.
