Iโ€™m fortunate to live in a city in which Sandhill Cranes are common and numerous from early spring to late fall. I see them every day, just going about my daily life, and Iโ€™m still delighted every time I spot them.

Apparently the #herps feed doesn't pick up tags in replies?

Gonna boost this one. For a shot that's barely in focus, overexposed and through a smudged lens - I'm inordinately proud of capturing the meme moment.

Please bring out your #PhotoFailFriday shots!

So there I was watching hundreds of birds flying in to roost at sunset. They move fast and the light was low so there were a lot of shots like this. What is that bird even doing?!

A small brown mottled bird, Crested Lark, has a good shake out and floofs up all the feathers. The crest standing up on its head is clear to see. There were a pair, digging around in the pine needles, looking for grubs.

I like learning how to ID all the birds, but I think Iโ€™ve come to accept that there might be some birds/some situations in which I might not be able to be certain of the ID. It used to frustrate me, but Iโ€™ve come to peace with it.

Itโ€™s a beautiful bird and beautiful capture, regardless. Iโ€™m an indifferent lister myself, so sometimes I feel like we can just appreciate the birds without needing absolute certainty of their identity.

They were also relatively uncooperative and often distant, and most of the observers were not experienced with either species. I think, in the end, the consensus was that it was 3 of one species and 1 of the other, and the fact it was a mixed group accounted for some of the confusion.

No yelling, weirdly. It was a strangely calm and quiet Killdeer.

They come through here infrequently during migration, and we had a group show up a year or two ago. The amount of bickering in the eBird ID comments over whether they were short-billed or long-billed (and why that person supported a particular ID) was a little hilarious.

Two shorebirds stand on wet, brown rocks at the edge of the water. They are both facing away, towards the water. Splashing blue-green waves are in the background. The smaller shorebird on the left (Semipalmated Sandpiper) has a white chest and light and dark brown patterned back, head, and wings. The larger shorebird on the right (Killdeer) has a white chest, light reddish-brown back, black ring around its neck, and orange eyes.
