All that serves to do is put off genuinely good people (because who would want to do it if they thought all their colleagues immediately thought that that made them bad people). And perpetuates the idea that only terrible people must want to do it.

I'm a bit tired of this kind of rhetoric. Some people want to do it because they genuinely want to serve their community, do well for their colleagues, try some new initiatives that they think might help. But we demonise them with this narrative that if they want to do it they're terrible people.

I think this is arguing the opposite! Digital formats come and go. Hard copies persist. Don't throw them out! And print your digital-only ones.

Where I live there isn't a ready supply of babysitters. It's just not very common here. Parents of their friends might have them for an hour, but no more really.

& many of these experiences end up being half/whole day affairs once you've factored in travel.That's too much childcare to outsource

We've done that with some of them. But for many of them, gift giving is love. And we're far away from most of them, so it's important to them.

The book idea I love. But honestly, tickets are so stressful. With family and work commitments, scheduling them is just impossible. Then it's not really a gift but a chore. Or more likely, wasted money because I can't do the thing because I can't take the children.

Going through old photos with my dad, when his mind had gone and the past was his only comfort, really did make me wonder what TF our and later generations will do when all the external anchors to our memories have been lost to digital decay

This is a bah humbug thread I know. But the guilt of these wasted presents weighs heavy. I'd rather they gifted the money to a charity I support on my behalf.

The present answer is never a Red Letter Day or vouchers for a spa or afternoon tea, with a use by date. Unless that comes with an actual plan to come and stay with me and take care of the children for a day or weekend.

I have so many wasted unused 'experience' vouchers now out of date. ☹️
