Being trans is not a mental illness. It is not a failure or an outcome to be prevented. Attempts to change or suppress someone’s identity are harmful and must be banned for people of all ages.

As parents of trans people, we want our children to receive timely care that supports their wellbeing.

Our children should be able to take part in society without being treated differently and without fear of prejudice or exclusion. FREEDOM FROM DISCRIMINATION

The rights that protect us all must also protect our trans and non-binary children, clearly and consistently, including in school, work, healthcare, housing, and public spaces. FREEDOM FROM DISCRIMINATION

Our children should be able to join in with friends, study without fear, apply for jobs, travel safely and access public services without prejudice. The rights that protect everyone must protect them clearly and consistently.

This is not a special request. It is equal treatment.

Trans+ people deserve to live, learn and work without being singled out or treated unfairly. As parents of trans+ people, we've seen how discrimination creates barriers in school, healthcare, housing and in everyday public life. It pushes people out of opportunities that others take for granted.

Non-binary people should also be recognised in law so that no one is left unseen or excluded.

Parents know how important it is for their children to have a secure foundation.

Legal recognition is part of that foundation. It protects trans and non-binary people in daily life and reduces opportunities for discrimination, delay or doubt.

Our children should be able to have documents that reflect who they are, with a process that is straightforward, accessible and does not disadvantage them.

Legal recognition should be straightforward and accessible, not a long or demeaning process that heightens vulnerability.

This includes recognising non-binary people in law so no one is left unseen or excluded.

Transparent Action - Proud Parents Taking a Stand

We want this respect for our own young and adult children, and we want it for every trans and non-binary person.

Parents of trans people of all ages are invited to join us by signing the Transparent Pledge. Add your name to help us speak with one united voice in support of dignity for all.

Our children should be called by their correct names and pronouns and know that those around them will treat them with respect.

People in positions of influence, such as teachers, employers, politicians and journalists have a responsibility to speak with kindness and compassion, challenging misinformation and promoting understanding backed by evidence

This principle matters because respect is the starting point for everything else.

It shapes how teachers speak to our children in classrooms, how employers treat trans+ staff, and how journalists and politicians talk about our families. It influences whether our children feel valued or targeted.

Transparent Action will continue to speak up for trans inclusion in every part of society, and for the rights of our children - whatever their age - to take part in the same activities their peers enjoy.

Our children deserve nothing less.

Inclusion is not a luxury. It's part of childhood every young person deserves.

Decisions like this have real consequences. As parents we see that impact first-hand... the excitement, friendships, hopes, then the devastating moment when it's taken away, and our children are told they're not welcome.

...She is absolutely devastated and was crying for so long. She still does dance class with her friends, which she loves. It’s just sad to build up her excitement and then it all comes crashing down. It is such a sad time for many trans girls who take part in girl guides and have made many friends and happy memories.” - Father to daughter E, 6 years old.

This is what exclusion looks like - It is a door closing on a child who only wanted to take part like everyone else.

Our children should have a place to belong. They should be able to join clubs, activities and community groups without barriers, fear or uncertainty.

Parents of trans people speak out... “My daughter has just done some trial sessions with the Rainbows as she has some friends that attend and she loved it. We are in the middle of arranging a legal name change and we were waiting for that to be sorted before we registered her. But today we were told that she can’t sign up now...

What happened to this young girl is not an abstract policy debate. It's a child who was excited to be part of Rainbows with her friends, tried her sessions, loved them, was ready to join. Now she's been told she doesn't belong.

No young person should have to question whether they are welcome in the organisation they have given so much to. Inclusion should not depend on shifting political pressure.

It should be a commitment that stands firm.

They were welcomed when they were needed. Now they are being told they no longer count.

This is the reality behind the policy change. It affects real people who have grown up in Guiding, who have contributed, led, and believed in its values.

Removing that sense of belonging causes real harm.

Parents of trans people speak out... “I am so sad and angry about this. My non-binary child has been involved in Girlguiding since their 5th birthday. They represented both the county and region on internationals and as a non-binary person were allowed to complete leadership training...

...They have been a Young Leader, a Leader at a Rainbow unit and, as an adult, became a county lead volunteer for LGBTQ+ issues. They are trying not to simply up and leave.”

🤍 We stand with this parent and every family who feels let down by the decision of Girlguiding to exclude trans members.

This person has given years of their time, energy and leadership to Girlguiding.

...This decision is not wanted by the majority of the leaders. It is being forced upon them by a minority who are happy to see children suffer. I am pleased that Scouting has welcomed girls into the organisation in all sections since 1991- all girls. Scouting is for everyone and will remain so. Again, I do not know the numbers, but there are many trans children throughout the organisation. They will continue to be welcome.”

Decisions like this have real consequences, and they fall hardest on the children who already face the most barriers.

Many leaders and volunteers did not want this. They value inclusion and want every child to feel part of their community.

...These organisations have given joy and a sense of belonging to generations and have prided themselves on their inclusivity. I do not know how many trans girls are at present in the Guiding organisation, but this decision makes no sense. What danger does a child pose? Imagine being told you are not welcome at 5, or 6 to enjoy activities with your friends. Friends you play with every day at school...

Parents with decades of experience in these organisations know that trans girls are not a danger, and excluding children who simply want to join their friends makes no sense.

Children should never be told they are not welcome in the same activities their classmates enjoy.
