I want to reiterate my deeply held belief. One of the biggest mistakes we are making with this tech is anthropomorphizing it and treating it like it is actually "reasoning". It's not doing that. And it cannot be held accountable. It's a machine.

So, as I said, I’ve thinking about how we design markets and experiment with something different.

My hope is for new markets ruled by a different set of values which *minimize harm and maximize collective good.*

I believe this is what we want to exist after capitalism.

😅 It hurts so bad everywhere in the beginning but bodies are insanely adaptable.

Over time, the hurt comes to be a signal that you’re making progress.

True story: I fucking hate working out. But my body rewards me for it greatly 🔥

Now it feels weird when I go too long without exercise.

When folks think of organizations with a democratic ethos, they often picture an organization run through consensus. In reality, the experience of democracy in an organization has three qualities:

I’ll also add that I don’t think hierarchical power structures are inherently oppressive.

However, I DO think that the primary responsibility of folks at the top *to be in service to those at lower levels.*

It’s not only about structures and systems. What the people actually do really matters.

Because the reality is that power = responsibility, and being a good steward of that power is often a lot of work that most folks don’t want.

But folks DO want a voice that is heard by leadership, the ability + safety to advocate for themselves, and confidence that someone’s addressing big issues.

FWIW, I’ve found that many groups favor fewer official decision makers when they are altruistic leaders.

What people seem to want more than prime decision making rights is the ability to stop or slow the process when they have major objections to the course of action.

Decision making can look a *lot* of ways. It really depends on the situation and the purpose or goals of the group.

And there will always be trade-offs between fairness, complexity, and speed.

In particular, I want to remind folks that it doesn’t mean you have to default to decisions by consensus (where everyone must agree).

But you do want to find ways to make space for everyone’s concerns and relevant interests, in earnest.

Even though :::waves arms::: ALL OF THIS is happening in areas we cannot directly control, it’s a great time for each of us to get clear on power structures in the organizations, communities, and groups we’re part of and practice democracy with intention.

We are at the beginning of a massive labor movement. IT IS A NEGOTIATION.

And it’s not just what the leaders of unions and corporations do, it’s also what each of us do every day — what we say, what we buy, what we pay attention to, what we show up for…

A new model for reciprocity is being born.

Every life goal should be coupled with the habits/routine/lifestyle you must adopt to make it real.

You are what you do.

I would call it “governance” vs politics, but I agree with the idea that over time, a system of decision making also emerges within the group. 💯

It's time to bring back the commons. When we enclose and privatize everything, we incentivize the values and norms of extraction and oppression. Markets that rely on bartering and common use/ownership incentivize values and norms for collaboration, cooperation and community

Yet we know that most folks don’t want things being commoditized when it’s vital to our health, our safety, our children, our education, our government, the planet, and so many other things like our general ability to access the basics of life.

When we decide that something may be bought or sold, we decide that it’s OK to treat it as a commodity.

It then becomes an instrument of profit and use.

Greed is only partially to blame.

Another major culprit is the expansion of markets and “market values” into spheres where they don’t belong.

Everything has value in some shape or form, but putting a monetary price on it promotes certain kinds of attitudes towards what is being exchanged.

Decades ago, many governments ceded power to markets, believing that they are the primary means of achieving public good.

We’re now in the late stages of many decisions that moved us from a “market economy” to a “market society”.

In that time, markets have become detached from morals.

“What Money Can’t Buy” helped me to crystallize the idea that not everything should be bought or sold.

Especially because the logic of buying and selling doesn’t just apply to material goods in our society. It governs our whole way of life.

We’re all swimming in the waters of capitalism.
