MoD/Army need to engage with the issues and stop gaslighting the family by pretending the issue can be addressed in any other way. Putting more women on court martial boards was something they started doing from 2023, isnβt a new thing and has no relevance at all to this case.

The family is calling for both with particular focus on the latter, which has been recommended by 2 independent reviews.

The issues are 1) sexual assaults should always go to police (that was clear in policy at the time, they just didnβt do it) and 2) (in this case, more importantly), serious complaints of sexual harassment like those she was experiencing should be handled by an independent body.

Jaysleyβs first βincidentβ was not even treated as a sexual assault when it should have been; and the second, the extensive sexual harassment she suffered for months, she did not even report, because the Army messed the first one up so badly.

The official response of @DefenceHQ @BritishArmy to the Jaysley Beck case appears to be βwe will put more women on court martial boardsβ. This has absolutely no relevance to that case and just gives the impression they are desperately scrambling for something to say

The family want to acknowledge and thank all those brave people that are speaking out. They do not want anyone to have to go through what they are suffering at present and urge anyone affected to get advice and help no matter how long ago it happened.

On @MilitBanter lots of service personnel are sharing their own sad stories of sexual assault and harassment today. Itβs incredibly moving.

He also confirmed he is leaving the Army, at his own request (ie he has not been dismissed). And we heard more very sad evidence of the impact of Jβs line managerβs βobsessiveβ behaviours.

The Sgt Maj accused of assault declined to answer questions about it, but was able to confirm he had promoted since the incident and was only stopped from taking up his next appointment after J died and questions started to be asked about how the incident had been handled.

He consequently delivered βminor administrative actionβ to the accused, the lowest sanction possible, that is wiped from a personnel file on posting.

J was required to attend a meeting with him (the senior male officer) and a male SSgt (both in uniform) to discuss this sensitive situation. He confirmed heβd had no training to deal with this.

A senior officer tasked with dealing with the Sgt Maj who was accused of pinning her down conceded he had omitted important parts of the allegation she had made when doing so, because he said he had not been made aware of them by the Regimental Colonel.

Today in court we heard that Jaysley had been βthe epitome of the kind of person we want to join the Armyβ.

about the sexual assault after J died. And evidence of fear amongst female soldiers that if they report bad behaviours from males, they will suffer the consequences. So they donβt report.

Also evidence from her then captain that when she tried to report the assault, his first thought was that she was lying about it to get out of training. The Regimental Colonel gave evidence that she was told her to remove certain information from her initial report β¦

This week a Coroner is investigating the circumstances of teenage soldier Jaysley Beckβs death. Weβve already heard a lot of evidence about the alarming behaviours of her immediate boss and an allegation of sexual assault that was not investigated.

Pressure builds on Starmer over payout for Gerry Adams
Lord Hermer, the Attorney General friend of the PM, refuses to say whether he profited from work with the Sinn Fein president
These attacks on Richard Hermer KC are an attack on the rule of law. Barristers have to take the cases that come their way. Itβs called the cab rank rule. He also acted for the family of a soldier murdered by the IRA.
