What a nice case study! There happens to be an eddy covariance tower there, and it collected data both and before these events.

Our new paper in GRL reveals widespread and divergent post-drought loss of gross primary production (GPP). 1/4 of the drought-induced GPP loss occurred after the drought, with a global mean of ∼0.74 Pg C yr−1. Led by Zhuoyi Zhao and Yanlian Zhou.

Okay, it is 50-140 million tonnes of CO2, not carbon. Then the extra carbon sink on a per unit area basis is ~90 - 250 gC m^-2 yr^-1, which can be reasonable. 😀
17.06.2025 20:57 — 👍 0 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0With around 50-140 million tonnes a year more than the previous estimates and the land area of 150,437 km^2 (South Island), the extra carbon sink would be ~330 - 930 gC m^-2 yr^-1. This extra sink is really high and might be too good to be true.
