One of Carr’s paintings with her typical dark forest, and here faced by a little creamy church with a little creamy steeple, surrounded by grave markers.

How was Emily Carr’s house in Victoria laid out? I know she took in boarders to cover expenses, but in “her" space she hoisted her furniture up on a pully system to have room to paint—but where was that, anyone know, have blueprints?

She manages to make BC forests look both tropical and dangerous.

Alas, I am retiring this page as I reorganize my social media life again. I used to do a brisk business with my art on FB—literally had often sold a piece within a minute of posting it—but it’s been dead here. Don’t know what my plans are at this point beyond this one decision yet… Thanks to all.

Jennifer Packer Confronts Grief Through Paintings That Cut Deep The painter mines an iconographical language of grief through delicate, translucent paintings imbued with a sense of intimacy and intensity.

Jennifer Packer’s tender portraits of friends veer between mark-making and stunning specificity. Even if their faces were blurred, even if they melted into their monochrome surrounds, they were fully and lovingly rendered.

Two adults argue above their child. Figures are made from napkins, black and white dotted, have dashes for words. Kid has unhappy face and arms over head.

Here’s model Emily Metalskin in her fox fur stole, again a take off on Otto Dix.

Woman stands in black hat wearing fox stole. Fox is prominent. Hands are green-gloved and on her chest.

After Otto Dix. Model Emily Metalskin. Thinking this is 9x12, and probably I painted it during the early part of this pandemic we’re in.

Person with monocle sits craning to look at the camera while seated at small bar table. Martini, cigs, matches. Tones of pink and green.

How do you feel about your mommy? I had an extremely contentious rel’t with mine. Anyhow, this quick sketch was from a pic I took of her when she turned 40. I’d just turned 17 and was already snap-happy. Painting shows yt woman wearing taupe dress with something feathery surrounding her sleeves, three red roses and three lit red candles against a beige wall.

Young white woman sits by the fire holding infant. Her dress is blue; she inclines her head toward the warmth. The fire looks like it’s coming from her feet (passion keeps us warm?).

After Van Gogh, tricky, time-consuming, made me ask myself how he managed a canvas a day. Talent and skill, of course, having no kids, but how else? I’ve never really known if I believe he was mentally ill.

I loved the time at the beginning of the pandemic when artists would build their online sessions in homages to famous painters. This little sketch, which I think is on paper, 9x12”, is from a Tamara de Lempicka session. Woman or non-binary person taking a swaggery position in fatigue-coloured clothing, long coat, trousers, white shirt. Yt woman staring at the viewer.

Sketch based on a Suzanne Valadon self-portrait. Valadon is staring into a mirror by a bowl of apples, her hair is short, blunt-cut brown, bangs. She wears a brown (with designs) dress.

She looks so sad, don’t you think? I often think of her life as this sad, I must admit. I went to her house once in Montmartre, only to find its art emphasis completely male, incl featuring her son. She had a little wall to the side mostly of her sketches.

Based on a Valadon self-portrait.

…2 Remember that in those days, having your photo taken meant a very long camera exposure where no one was allowed as much movement as a deep breath—that’s why everyone looked so irritated and unhappy.

Males on the left, three: father, toddler, young teen, girls on the right: three sisters, mother on the far right. My ancestors painted in tones of pink, blue and red. 16x20” oil on canvas.

Sometimes it’s fun to take on a glum photograph from more than 100 years ago. The mother here was a sister to my great-grandmother, and the children my grandmother’s cousins.

Another in the autistic masking series. I believe in covid masking, too, and I believe there’s a painting here that shows that in 1918. But autistic masks are metaphorical. What would they look like if we could see them? Painting in oil, unsure of size right now, non-binary bald autist in white t-shirt, grey jacket, on turquoise bkgd. The mask is that of a parrot, hooked beak, red, orange and white face.

Do you have an obasan or granny who looks like this? Would she sit you down with a bowl of food, or is she another type of person? Mine was the second. Although she may have been warm to my siblings, she never was to me.

If you want the very best oil sticks, choose PauldeMarrais.com. Buttery, custom colour orders welcome. Get small or ask for large. I’ve been getting mine here for years after being disgruntled by all the commercially avail ones. Not getting paid to say this.
