Two white women in 1918 stroll down the street wearing masks against the flu. (Not in very protective masks. Weโ€™re much luckier today to be able to find ones that work.) But it shows that protections/mitigations donโ€™t have to ruin your life. 24โ€x30โ€ oil on stretched canvas. Colours are brown, green, red, peach, off-white.

In 1969, Judy Chicago and Miriam Schapiro founded the Feminist Art Program at CalArts, challenging male-dominated art education. It empowered women to explore identity, collaboration, and political expressionโ€”reshaping the art world from the ground up. #ArtHistory

Even though the world has been pitched into war, a Sunday painting, one that perhaps expresses where we are now:

Do you feel endangered when you see this? I do.

How does this one make you feel? I canโ€™t imagine, really, the danger of a kid feeding a kangaroo, even a young one, but I personally would have loved the actuality. Heart sigh.

Included in Jordan Casteelโ€™s first institutional solo exhibition at the Denver Art Museum between 2019 and early 2020, โ€œMomโ€ is a poignant tribute to the artistโ€™s mother, Lauren Young Casteel. Painted in 2013, at the dawn of Jordanโ€™s practice, it demonstrates the rich, sensual painterly language for which she has achieved widespread critical recognition.

With intuitive brushwork and deep, warm colors, Casteel captures a moment of peaceful solitude, registering the play of light and shadow across her momโ€™s face, clothes and hands. It is a rare example of a female portrait in Casteelโ€™s early practice; a testament, perhaps, to the inspiration her mother had on her outlook. As President and CEO of the Womanโ€™s Foundation of Colorado, as well as a noted philanthropist and activist, Lauren Young Casteel became the first Black woman in the state to head a foundation.

Saturated with glowing familial warmth, this work is a tender celebration of the woman who helped to shape the artistโ€™s social and artistic values. Indeed, her motherโ€™s devotion to social justice resounds throughout Casteelโ€™s artwork, which focuses on highlighting figures who might otherwise remain unseen.

Casteel recalled, โ€œThe thing that my mother always instilled in us coming of age was that itโ€™s not necessarily about being the โ€˜granddaughter ofโ€™ or the โ€˜daughter ofโ€™ โ€ฆ itโ€™s about living the values through the work that youโ€™re doing โ€ฆ Long before I became Jordan Casteel the painter, I was Jordan Casteel who understood the value of everyday stories and people and creating voices for people and room for people who might otherwise feel that thereโ€™s no room for them.โ€
