Ursula von der Leyen & @vonderley....1h X The situation in the Middle East remains volatile.
But three things are clear:
First, there is renewed hope for the long-suffering people of Iran.
We strongly support their right to determine their own future.
Second, we must do everything possible to de-escalate and stop the conflict spreading.
Iran must cease its reckless and indiscriminate attacks on its neighbours and sovereign countries.
Third, the stability of the region is of the utmost importance.
The only lasting resolution is a diplomatic one.
This means a credible transition for Iran which includes the halt to both the nuclear and ballistic programmes, as well as an end to destabilising action in the region.
This afternoon, we will discuss the overall situation in the meeting of the Security College.
Because from energy to nuclear, migration to security, Europe must be prepared for the fall-out from recent events.

Yes, the 3 things are clear, but then added explanation of the approach is what makes them murky again.

Do we have law? Does this law apply to all? Can we start there.

We talked about the thrust of the Trump quote on potential leaders being removed for the episode of the podcast recorded tonight and I know it sounds funny but the implications it holds for the civilian population in Iran are incredibly dire and it’s hard to laugh at it for that reason.

So Trump is OK with leaving the current regime in charge of Iran β€” just like he left the Maduro regime in power in Venezuela.

How long before they do join the strikes, I wonder?

I just bought a new bottle for hubby today for our Persian new year, coming up in a couple of weeks.

I also got my councils mixed up. Honestly the system is so intertwined that it’s ultimately more than one body involved. For now Arafi is appointed part of the 3 member interim leadership. We have to wait and see how things unfold amid the non-stop strikes.

Unlike other hardliners (like Khamenei's son Mojtaba), Arafi does not have deep, direct ties to the IRGC or the security establishment.

In short: He is essentially Khamenei 2.0 with a tech upgrade. He offers the same hardline policies but with a more globalist approach to enforcing them.

🧡 Following the death of Khamenei, high-ranking cleric Alireza Arafi has been appointed to Iran’s 3-member interim leadership council. A polyglot and tech-focused hardliner, Arafi represents ideological continuity and a "steady hand" for the regime.

Arafi is a longtime protΓ©gΓ© of Khamenei.

There’s the khobregan council (experts) who directly pick the leader and then the GC has oversight on them.

Shora ye negahban literally means guardian council. Their job is to appoint the successor. Pahlavi has his supporters inside and outside the country (not my choice by a mile) but that regime is not going down without a fight and dragging down everyone in the region with it, my people included.

I was born in an Iranian prison. My parents were held in their jails. My uncles lie in their mass graves.
Nothing you can tell me about the crimes of the Iranian regime that I haven't lived in blood and bone.
That doesn't mean I want my people bombed, maimed, killed, their homes in ruins.
If your vision of liberation comes only through the destruction of innocent lives, then it's not freedom you're after.

I am pro Iranian people. I stand with them against their own government’s repression AND against the imperial violence in the form of bombs dropped from the sky from Israel & the US who have already killed hundreds.

I support neither imperialism or dictatorship.

Sahar Delijani said it best:

He was 86. The succession plan is in motion if not already having been in motion. This was never a one strike job and Trump would be naive to believe it. But he did it anyway! Let’s wait and see how things unfold.

American news talking about β€œthe new era for Iran” - have you eliminated the regime? Or are you leaving the same regime as you did in Venezuela?

Let’s be real for a hot minute. Face of a regime is not the regime itself.

My parents and grandmother (my grandma’s a Cdn dual citizen), my in laws and our extended families live in Iran. Honestly, I don’t know if there is to be a coup or if the IRGC will just use all its military options and try to find a replacement for now. We have to see how the air strikes continue.
