Today is the 50th anniversary of the Individuals with Disabilities in Education Act.
While IDEA was a leap forward for disability rights, members like Jean understand that there is still a long way to go.
Twenty-six states have implemented law or policies in place to limit cellphone use in K–12 classrooms. While many of these changes are still new and long-term outcomes will take time to measure, early signs point to more focused classrooms and stronger learning environments for students.

We must fully fund our neighborhood public schools.
We must create an education system that works for all.

The FDA has suddenly dropped a proposed rule to require asbestos testing in cosmetics.
The rule would've set up testing to identify cancer-causing asbestos in talc-containing products.
Contamination has repeatedly been found in talc-based cosmetics before.

Senate Republicans are going after basic vehicle-safety mandates, like automatic brakes and child safety alarms.
They claim that these safety protocols are the real reason for the car affordability crisis.
The solution they're proposing instead is autonomous vehicles.

The landmark law transformed education—making schools more inclusive for students with disabilities. But IDEA has never been fully funded or implemented.
We have a duty to advocate for it, so all students can thrive.
Educators know the recent interruption of SNAP benefits will hit students hard. Yet across the country, education support professionals—many of whom rely on SNAP themselves—are stepping up to make sure students and their families don’t go hungry.

From Texas to Pennsylvania to Ohio, voters elected Democrat-backed candidates in some of the nation’s largest school systems; a clear sign that communities are choosing inclusive public schools over division.

The 50th anniversary of IDEA is a moment to celebrate and take action. Before IDEA, millions of children with disabilities were denied access to quality education. With the anniversary this Saturday, NEA is sharing ways to talk about the importance of protecting students’ rights this holiday season.
