Statement on American Cultural Resource Management Companies and Saudi Arabia

In recent days, the news of comedians accepting money from the government of Saudi Arabia to perform at the Riyadh Comedy Festival has cast a spotlight on the ethics surrounding business ties to a government with a documented history of human rights abuses including slavery, the murder of journalists, and financial support of terrorism. While the current media cycle focuses on the involvement of celebrity comedians, we take this opportunity to condemn the lesser known, but no less unethical, business relationships between the American cultural resource management industry and the government of Saudi Arabia. Namely, Chronicle Heritage, AECOM, and WSP each have extensive contracts with the Saudi government, with Chronicle Heritage specifically providing archaeological services to the Saudi government through the Royal Commission for Al-Ula to support the development of their cultural tourism industry. These business entanglements are especially troubling as they directly support the advancement of development projects that will almost certainly be carried out by exploited slave laborers, as is the case with countless projects sponsored by the Saudi government.

As a collective of cultural resource management professionals organizing for better labor conditions for archaeological technicians in the United States, Unionizing American Archaeology stands in solidarity with exploited workers around the globe, and strongly condemns the participation of American CRM companies in Saudi government development projects. Archaeological technicians who work for multiple companies on a contract basis are in a unique position to take a stand against this massive ethical violation by refusing employment offers from companies with business relationships with the Saudi government. We urge archaeological technicians to refuse work with Chronicle Heritage, AECOM, WSP, and an…

🚨🚨 My dear friend and fellow academic, the Palestinian American sociologist @emanabdelhadi.bsky.social has been taken by the Cook County Sheriff near Chicago. They have not mirandized her. Please signal boost. All eyes on Broadview for Eman and the community she was defending 🚨🚨

A dark, almost black ball of tightly wound thread. The thread is densely packed, creating a l complex interwoven texture.

The condition of fabrics from pile dwelling and wetland settlements is amazing. This charred ball of thread was found at the site of Marin-Epagnier/PrΓ©fargier. It was made of hemp or lime fibres, and dates about 3900 to 3300 BC. The thread measures a total of about 10 m in length.

Universities. Rural hospitals. Tech companies. Several sectors are going to be profoundly hurt by this. Not to mention the chaos of the moment as current H1-B owners scramble to get back to the U.S., cancel travel, etc. due to the uncertainty. An absolute mess. As intended.

I would much rather these have been hasty decisions made due to hysteria. Seeing these fears regularly become reality is very chilling.

The H1-B announcement is extreme and shocking. As I usually say, I’m not surprised - paranoia about policies like this and about crackdowns on dissent and speech largely contributed to my permanent departure from the USA 2 years ago. But seeing my dear friends panic is breaking my heart.

As grant money starts drying up, it's more important than ever not to waste it on paying publishers' open access "article processing fees" when we can host PDFs for free. Tom Morgan and I wrote a paper on this, forthcoming at Science and Public Policy. Accepted draft here: osf.io/preprints/os...

Is there anyone else who went to grad school outside of Canada who had a hellish nightmare with CRA, particularly this year? I have great tax people who I hired to help me with the last couple of years of cross-border living, but CRA is really throwing us all for a loop right now.

New form to sign the petition for a Special Meeting of the EAA (to discuss the genocide in Gaza and the handling of the situation by the Executive Board). Previous one was reported and taken down by Google for "violating its terms". Wonder who reported it?πŸ€” #eaa2025

'Extraordinary' Roman helmet from war-ending battle found in the sea off Sicily Archaeologists recovered the "Montefortino"-style helmet in an underwater excavation in the Aegadian Islands off the coast of Sicily.

This spiffy bronze helmet was recovered off the coast of Sicily and dates to the First Punic War between Rome and Carthage. πŸ§ͺ🏺

Well, by this logic, I would expect them to announce a reversal of EAA decisions re: participation by Russian academics, made in 2022. If they do not, then it's clear that they are making exceptions for Israeli academics, and only Israeli academics - in which case, they owe more explanations.

I wrote as much to the Board, but I'd really need to understand all of what happened with full transparency before I ever consider becoming an EAA member again. We shouldn't be finding out these details via BlueSky strictly, but rather they should be honest!
