It's been a couple years since Reach of the Roach God was published, and I'm still thinking about how it pulled off stat blocks without stats.

It depends a lot on the game and the writer in question.
If the writer has an interesting conversational voice and it fits with the game's themes, it can be great. Otherwise, it usually has to go.
