A Bestiary of Modern Scientists Field notes on the species that inhabit contemporary academia

During extended fieldwork in academic habitats, I observed several distinct species.

I’ve compiled the notes here: medium.com/p/a-bestiary...

I suspect many will recognize local fauna.

The need to be “on” constantly is so deeply embedded across so many cultures. Who/what gets celebrated and rewarded needs to change for this kind of cycle to flourish. I still see breaks of any kind (short or long term, regular or one off) being judged really harshly as an individual flaw.

Exactly! Breaks should be embedded in the work design, not something you have to fight for

The workplace wasn’t designed for humans – and it shows Burnout isn’t a personal failure. It’s a design flaw. But there is another way.

The idea of renewing people’s energy and skills can sound radical in today’s target-driven work culture.

Black-and-white comic with text at the top that reads: “The best part of getting older is gonna be intentionally misusing slang around teenagers just to watch them squirm.”

Below, a simple stick-figure adult says, “Oh man, that song is so pwned!” A smaller stick-figure teenager stands beside them, labeled “twitch,” indicating discomfort or embarrassment.

This document examines the legal and regulatory landscape of artificial intelligence (AI) and algorithmic management (AM) in Spain, focusing on collective bargaining and judicial responses.

Judicial Responses to AI and AM

Landmark rulings have deemed dismissals linked to automation as unfair unless justified by prior business difficulties.
Courts have upheld the use of algorithmic tools in some cases while ruling against their use in ways that undermine workers' rights, such as during strikes.
Recent cases mandate transparency regarding algorithms affecting workers, reinforcing the right to access information about decision-making processes.

Regulatory Developments

Spain's regulatory framework for AI and AM is built on three pillars: platform work legislation, data protection law, and AI-specific regulations.
The Rider Law (Law 12/2021) formalizes employment status for gig workers and enhances transparency regarding algorithmic systems affecting working conditions.
Data protection laws, including the GDPR and Spain’s Organic Law on Data Protection, establish digital rights and limit employer surveillance.
The draft law aligning with the EU AI Act introduces stricter obligations for high-risk AI systems and emphasizes transparency and worker rights.

Collective Bargaining Trends

Collective agreements are increasingly addressing AI and AM, with three main approaches: transposing legal requirements, broadening consultation duties, and expanding governance mechanisms.
Several agreements are discussed: the Banking Sector Agreement, the Food Trade Agreement, the Just Eat Agreement.

Two stick figures.

#WFH during COVID-19: negative affect rose the most among #parents working remotely in less-teleworkable jobs, especially during school closures. Clear reminder that #remotework impacts are unequal and that weak care infrastructures amplify strain.
