The optics of this coerced removal and caving to it are terrible. If it’s cohort institutions, such as Harvard and Columbia, can fight, why can’t Virginia? Because it is far more subject to the corrupt whims of public political control than private universities.

For all Jim’s stated altruistic and supposed personal reasons for resigning, I agree with other posters here that he made the wrong decision and should have fought and if need be forced the board to fire him and reveal its true colors.

I fear that this university, which has been my north star, may no longer reflect my values and I will have to separate from further support and loyalty to it.

Coincidence that this happened within 48 hours of the Republican governor of Virginia appointing four stuffed-shirt cronies of his from the high-finance world to that board, including his pal from the Carlyle group?
