ICIMOD and NGO partners worked with 11 municipalities across four high-risk watersheds in Nepal’s Koshi River Basin to train staff on integrating gender considerations into disaster planning and budgeting. Adaptations were also made to Nepal’s national online financial management system, SuTRA.

Women are disproportionately vulnerable to disasters, yet their needs are often overlooked in planning, warning systems, shelters, and post-disaster reconstruction.

The interactive visualisation system of the toolkit is built on the Tethys platform, an open-source framework for Geographic Information System (GIS)-run applications for environmental data and models.

HIWAT helps weather experts and decision-makers in disaster preparedness and mitigation.

It provides outlooks on key meteorological parameters including high rainfall rates, lightning strikes, thunder, hail, extreme temperatures, and high-impact winds.

Available in Bangladesh, Bhutan, Nepal and Pakistan, HIWAT uses a weather research and forecasting (WRF) model, satellite data, and ensemble forecasts.

Timely forecasts and early warning systems are more critical now than ever.

Developed by our Regional Information Service (RIS), ICIMOD’s High Impact Weather Assessment Toolkit (HIWAT), provides 54-hour forecasts to help communities and governments prepare for extreme weather events.

In the Hindu Kush Himalaya, communities are facing increasing extreme weather events, such as heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, extreme temperatures, and strong winds. These escalating risks affect lives, livelihoods, and infrastructure.

ICIMOD is supporting the Department of Environment and Climate Change (DECC) of the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources (MoENR) for developing the NCAAP for Bhutan.

The NCAAP will serve as a roadmap for cleaner and healthier air in Bhutan.

The study, conducted in 2021 across three key source districts for brick kiln labourers, Dang, Salyan, and Rolpa, covered 500 households and used a sustainable livelihoods framework. It was conducted shortly after the second COVID-19 wave.

The study calls for the urgent strengthening of agriculture and livestock-based livelihoods through irrigation, seed production, market access, and for vocational training to equip workers with skills beyond the brick-making sector.

A recent paper on brick kiln workers found that 60% of brick kiln workers were from the most marginalised ethnic groups (Magar and Tharu) and 24% were dalits. Many reported being forced to migrate for work due to lack of livelihood options in home districts.
