To break the ice, ICIMOD brought together frontline representatives from government, research, civil society and communities in Bhutan, India and Nepal on 18 June 2025 in Phuentsholing, Bhutan to explore and foster ideas and opportunities for inclusive, sustainable and scalable coexistence solutions

Mainstream deliberations also under document and underutilise traditional knowledge and practices of Indigenous peoples and local communities in designing solutions.

Our current, narrow misconception of human wildlife conflict – as a megafauna-only issue – is constraining our capacity to address the full extent of the issue.

Yet households and communities faced with persistent crop raids and property damage from smaller animals may abandon land, home and livelihoods. At the same time rampant retaliatory killing of small animals pose a threat to the region's biodiversity.

While there is growing awareness of deadly or dangerous conflict between humans and megafauna in the Hindu Kush Himalayan midhills, less is known and being done to mitigate the often very severe economic impact of conflict with smaller animals – monkeys, porcupines, rodents or wild boars.

The International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) and the United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organisation in Nepal (FAO Nepal) have launched a photo contest to capture the surreal beauty and the changes that are unfolding in these rangelands.

Rangelands in the HKH region are the lifeline of rich and diverse flora and fauna, source of critical ecosystem services and the mainstay of several pastoralist communities.

But the rangelands are also under immense climatic and anthropocentric stress.

ICIMOD and NGO partners worked with 11 municipalities across four high-risk watersheds in Nepal’s Koshi River Basin to train staff on integrating gender considerations into disaster planning and budgeting. Adaptations were also made to Nepal’s national online financial management system, SuTRA.

Women are disproportionately vulnerable to disasters, yet their needs are often overlooked in planning, warning systems, shelters, and post-disaster reconstruction.

HIWAT helps weather experts and decision-makers in disaster preparedness and mitigation.

It provides outlooks on key meteorological parameters including high rainfall rates, lightning strikes, thunder, hail, extreme temperatures, and high-impact winds.

Available in Bangladesh, Bhutan, Nepal and Pakistan, HIWAT uses a weather research and forecasting (WRF) model, satellite data, and ensemble forecasts.
