Absolutely! I’ve had a lot of respect for Steve Kerr over the years, and this is surprising and disappointing.

Her whole theme was how the US was better off under the British system….

I once went to a college commencement (W&M) where the speaker was Margaret Thatcher and she lectured us on how deficient our Constitution is. This article by The Economist reminds me of that. It was not well received.

John Oliver on Trump’s attack on higher education: β€˜No capitulation will be enough’ Last Week Tonight host looks into the administration’s attacks on universities’ public funding in the name of β€˜fighting antisemitism’

The latest episode of John Oliver’s show is on higher ed and scientific research, so well worth watching if you’re in either space. My favorite moment was when he showed Trump saying he would β€œmake Harvard great…again…probably”

If every university president watched, we would be better off

Everyone should walk out on everything this bloviator says all of the time, just like MIT’s Nancy Hopkins did back in the day (for those who don’t know the history: web.mit.edu/fnl/vol/174/...)

So glad to see this pointed out and with accurate details as well. Also want to mention the amazing, groundbreaking Nancy Hopkins’ response at the time: web.mit.edu/fnl/vol/174/...

I love that series, but I’m feeling like I shouldn’t be watching any of the new season given the whole Colbert situation. I really like your posts and I’m curious what your take on this is

So glad to see this point raised. I am in Texas and we have gotten blue alerts for cities all the way across the state. No wonder people have alert fatigue.

This past week, I was able to visit the site of the FBI office burglary in Media PA where a group of ordinary citizens brought down the illegal FBI operation of CoIntelpro designed to intimidate Americans exercising their right to protest and free speech. Important to remember the impact they had.

Their contempt for science, and the rational, reasonable thought it represents, just knows no bounds.

Between his attacks on NIH, NSF, and higher ed generally, Trump has very nearly placed a moratorium on public scientific research in this country, yet legacy media seems determined to frame it exclusively as a snit over Harvard.

I believe that Jenifer Silk at the University of Pittsburgh had money taken away from her study on preventing suicide in LGBT teens.

The Project Gutenberg eBook of Simple Sabotage Field Manual, by Office of Strategic Services

From a thread discussing how civil servants can fight back against the fork in the road memo, I present to you OSS’s Simple Sabotage Field Manual from 1944. Section 11 of chapter 5 is the most relevant for now. It’s also on the CIA webpage, but this is a clean link. www.gutenberg.org/files/26184/...

The USAF removed Tuskegee Airmen & Women Airforce Service Pilots of WWII from basic training curriculum. For 30 years I promised these women I would not let them ever be forgotten again. We worked for decades to have them remembered. The Airmen too. Knowledge is power. πŸ—ƒοΈ www.msn.com/en-us/societ...

I'll put a link to the actual document. Warning, the wording of some of it is very inflammatory:

chcoc.gov/sites/defaul... 6/6

22.01.2025 15:14 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

2, cont) The wording is: "There will be no adverse consequences for timely reporting this information. However, failure to report this information within 10 days may result in adverse consequences."

I thought ratting out your friends was stage 3 or 4 of facism, but I guess we are skipping ahead. 5/

22.01.2025 15:14 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

2, cont.) Moreover, this is not just a way for any person to attack or target a colleague without consequences (again, bad enough), but if you might know something and don't report it, you are also in trouble. 4/

22.01.2025 15:13 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

1 cont.) Break your arm and need help with a new keyboard? Too bad. Wheelchair can't fit into a narrower cubicle? Too bad.

2) App. A directs people to *report anyone else* that might be connected to DEIA efforts, but whose title is in "coded or imprecise language," to OPM for removal. 3/

22.01.2025 15:12 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

1) DEIA offices and contracts are being shuttered. "A" stand for accessibility. So, in addition to getting rid of DEI efforts (bad enough) there will now no longer be any staff or funding to help people who need accommodations for physical challenges. 2/

22.01.2025 15:10 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

You've probably seen the stories that federal DEI offices have been directed to close. The NYT headline, for example, was "The administration ordered federal diversity efforts to shut down by Wednesday night." Two very important things are being omitted by that sort of headline. 1/

Reagan slashed the budget of the Solar Energy Research Institute, which is now the National Renewable Energy Lab, from $130M in 1980 under Carter to $30M in one year. This was bad for the US, then the leader in solar research, and bad for climate change. It was good for fossil fuel companies.
