Microsoft’s Hypocrisy on AI Can artificial intelligence really enrich fossil-fuel companies and fight climate change at the same time? The tech giant says yes.

And it’s MUCH less comment than Microsoft had 10 months ago, when energy division lead Darryl Willis did an entire interview with the Atlantic on this topic.

Guess Microsoft realized engaging with journalists about its oil business wasn’t helping greenwash it πŸ™ƒ www.theatlantic.com/technology/a...

He helped Microsoft build AI to help the climate. Then Microsoft sold it to Big Oil. A former Microsoft product manager reveals how the tech giant is using AI to help Big Oil drillβ€”and how he and his partner are now pushing for change.

Nice piece by @emorwee.bsky.social on the former Microsoft employees demanding the company hold itself accountable for its oil contracts.

Astounding that a year after I reported a similar story for @grist.org and @drilledmedia.bsky.social, MFST has no comment!

Trump's second term is creating 'a limbo moment' for US battery recyclers The president hasn't directly targeted the nascent industry, but his clean energy rollbacks could hurt it.

When your government calls for rapidly boosting domestic mineral supplies while rolling back policy support for clean energy, what does it mean on balance?

That’s the existential question US battery recycling companies are asking right now.

Earth MRI may owe its success to the broad bi-partisan support for critical minerals (despite often fierce community opposition to new mines). Biden wanted more US mining to support a made-in-America clean energy manufacturing base. Trump wants more mining to support, well, mining companies.

26.03.2025 11:20 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

Like other BIL-funded programs, Earth MRI funding was paused following Trump's Day 1 EO freezing out "green new deal" climate programs.

But that same order directed the interior department to accelerate geological mapping of US critical minerals. Nobody ever thought the funding was in real danger.

Since then, the program has made big strides filling in the nation's geological maps. It has also produced the first nationwide inventory of abandoned mine sites and is now funding research to investigate the rare metals and minerals found in mine waste.

Earth MRI is one of the most successful federal Earth science programs you've never heard of. It seeks to map the nation's critical mineral resources -- both in rocks and in abandoned mine waste nationwide.

It was started during the first Trump admin, and got a massive funding boost from the BIL.
