Sonic, indeed, CAN go dark! He doesn't need false emeralds to do it either- but he'll be stronger if they're around.
The chaos energy he's absorbed from extended use of rings and the Chaos Emeralds usually lays dormant. However, bring enough rage out, and it will corrupt him- turning him dark.

This version of Sonic is specifically game/IDW Sonic. He has NO knowledge of Sally, or any other freedom fighter- and he's an only child.
