Also in the Fern Room, two turtles are facing each other, sunning like pros, stretched out all the way to their pointy claws. One's tail is curled. Again, ferns everywhere.

The preceding two scenes in my sketchbook: in gouache the turtle and mangrove tree with koi (but instead two of the HUGE koi that weren't in my photo, but were swimming everywhere), and then in black pen the two turtles, with just some gouache ferns painted in around them.

“Pollinator Gardens” for bees and butterflies are a gateway drug. What you really want is a wildlife garden. Build a habitat for bunnies and songbirds and skunks and raccoons, get the really cool stuff like foxes and hawks

Our friend Dennis (Deutsch-Nederlander) crashed his bike (a Canyon) bad on wet cobblestones in Speyer (DE) earlier this winter, so he’s back in Chicago for a while to have his dental work done. We had a lovely bike ride with him up to Evanston to see his niece and sit in a cafe. #chicago #bikechi

For a few days in spring and fall Chicago seems almost fit for human habitation.

A black-and-white historical photo taken on November 13, 1902, shows a horse-drawn carriage crossing a damaged wooden bridge. Two people sit in the carriage, and there are stacks of lumber and a railroad car in the background. The bridge surface is uneven, with broken boards and scattered bricks in the foreground. Smoke or fog is visible in the distance.

Color photo, taken during sunrise. We're standing in the middle of a two-lane US highway, looking down the median toward the horizon. Yellow solid/dotted lines shoot down the road, which is mostly black and empty. At the end, we see a pair of headlights pointed our direction. Along the side, trees in silhouette are almost black. The sky above is peach/pink near the horizon, just fading to blue-violet near the top of the image.

In the face of it all, I’ll just share some art from our house today. This sketch, “Tame Finch,” is by Alice Elizabeth Soper (1905–1990).

I am so pleased to find out that the DuPont-Whitehouse House (Oscar Cobb, 1875) has finally gotten the substantial restoration that it deserves after being long neglected and often vacant.

Built for the superintendent of a DuPont gunpowder factory at 36th & Western, it was later moved a block away.

Two 1.5-story brick cottages. The one on the left has a Dutch gable roof. The facade is clad in brick in various shades of gray. There is an arched window in the gable with two small rectancgular windows on either side. There are crowned with a stone arch with a central medallion. The house on the right is red brick with a classic gable roof. The windows in the gable are similar to those on the house next door, although the stone trim has been painted white.
