Look at that for perception! I love the use of the word 'globe' to be really specific.

Oh it’s amazing. I’ve given lectures at university for ITTs and I always read this to them to show how you can elevate a poem from a read to a performance.

Also, never read this poem and am now excited to add it to my stash of great to teach poetry. What a fantastic use of voice!

I LOVE this- being ambitious but using art, oracy and drama to include the texts. More of this at KS3 please!

NYMPH! NYMPH! WHAT ARE YOUR BEADS? I flipping love it. We’re being ambitious as they’re Year 1 but it’s such a beautiful poem to act out with character voices and we’re going to create some water colour art of their own Saltmarsh. I wonder which characters will be overhead on theirs?

A History of England in 25 Poems
by Catherine Clarke

This is the history of England told in a new way: glimpsed through twenty-five remarkable poems written down between the eighth century and today, which connect us directly with the nation's past, and the experiences, emotions and imaginations of those who lived it.

These poems open windows onto wildly different worlds - from the public to the intimate, from the witty to the savage, from the playful to the wistful. They take us onto battlefields, inside royal courts, down coal mines and below stairs in great houses. Their creators, witnesses to events from the Great Fire of London to the Miners' Strike, range from the famous to the forgotten, yet each invites us into an immersive encounter with their own time.

A History of England in 25 Poems is a portal to the past; a constant companion, filled with vivid voices and surprising stories alongside familiar landmarks, and language that speaks in new ways on each reading.

Catherine Clarke's knowledge and passion take us inside the words and the moments they capture, with thoughtful insights, humour and new perspectives on how the nation has dreamed itself into existence - and who gets to tell England's story.

Just read @cathamclarke.bsky.social’s piece on Edward Thomas’s Adlestrop in her excellent book A History of England in 25 Poems. So enlightening and informative. Huge poignancy too.

My local library is literally a 2 minute stroll from my front door. I popped in yesterday & borrowed 3 great books & it's honestly such a treat. I see people getting English lessons there, baby groups, SEN kids getting tuition, there's a boardgame club - it's a genuine community hub.

In subject English, knowledge & understanding is cumulative - tricky pedagogically if reduced to ‘knowledge items’. It is more non-hierarchical, involves creativity, knowledge is generative as much as it is ‘given’. Holistic, simultaneous learning of knowledge & understanding at its heart, at best.
