A scoop of pistachio at Max and Mina's Ice Cream, Kew Gardens Hills, Queens. Also shown: a pair of vintage ads, in the company of record albums, bumper stickers, cereal boxes, and what-have-you that blanket the shop's counter front, walls, and ceiling.

Lox with honey mustard and toasted almonds, one of several varieties; fried gefilte fish awaiting mushroom sauce; and a spicy Moroccan-style fish stew from Yitzchok's Herring, 7214 Main St., Kew Gardens Hills, Queens (all of these graciously comped).

Fresh from the fryer, as it's best enjoyed, this ι²œζ€’ε€§θ‘±ι₯Ό/scallion pancake/pastelito de cebolla was almost too hot to handle. (H/T Gordon Yu for details on the owners' Guizhou and Dominican roots). Next time I'll test my fingers on the one with shrimp! At The Pancake, 13655 Roosevelt, Flushing, Queens

In Russian, "kartoshka" can mean "potato," but it might also be a no-bake confection shaped like one. Cookie crumbs, butter, condensed milk, and cocoa powder are common ingredients; mine had crushed walnuts, too. At the new Dmitriev's Bistro, 1212 Ave. Z, Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn

My bourek annabi β€” thin pastry leaves wrapped around mashed potato and minced beef, enriched with soft-cooked egg, and fried β€” was limber as a flapjack, too limber to eat while holding it aloft. At Foodz, a new Algerian shop in Jersey City, I relied instead on an out-of-the-box solution.

Okra soup with whiting and an oatmeal swallow, King's Pride Food, Jersey City. I've never heard this Nigerian soup described as "drawy," but the word well captures the texture of simmered fresh-cut okra. Also: leavings (no cutlery needed); the restaurant beside Masjid al-Iman.
