My bourek annabi — thin pastry leaves wrapped around mashed potato and minced beef, enriched with soft-cooked egg, and fried — was limber as a flapjack, too limber to eat while holding it aloft. At Foodz, a new Algerian shop in Jersey City, I relied instead on an out-of-the-box solution.

Okra soup with whiting and an oatmeal swallow, King's Pride Food, Jersey City. I've never heard this Nigerian soup described as "drawy," but the word well captures the texture of simmered fresh-cut okra. Also: leavings (no cutlery needed); the restaurant beside Masjid al-Iman.

A last black and white shake at Hector's Cafe & Diner, 44 Little West 12th St., which has outlasted almost all the butchers in the Meatpacking District. After 76 years, Hector's closes its doors for the last time on Friday afternoon.

Sel roti with alu ko achar — a Nepalese ring of deep-fried rice flour, whose sweetness balanced the pungency of potato salad — prepared by Nanda-Bhauju Sel Roti at last weekend's Hamro Mela, Jackson Heights, Queens

Under the lids, you'll find the same ices as at many other carts. It's the street vendor's pride in her business — note the crocheted cozies beneath the eye-catching towels — that makes a small cup of coconut taste a tiny bit better. Delicioso Coco Helado, 125th at Frederick Douglass.
