The United States simply does not have the recordkeeping framework necessary to demand strict proof of citizenship. We have a messy patchwork of systems.

Problem is, many of the people in power consider that a good thing, because it means they can disenfranchise and deport citizens too.

Correct. These are fundamentally scams. Perhaps a small number of supporters mistakenly believe the mission is genuine; that's irrelevant, because the mission itself is fraudulent and all the people in charge are scam artists. There's no scenario in which these scams are molded into genuine reforms.

On the last day of the year, a glimpse into a magical, mystical world. The marshland in Tata, my parents' hometown in northwestern Hungary. An elevated walkway takes you over lakes and marshes fed by natural springs, home to turtles & rare water birds.
