Happy Christmas from our lab. Some projects funded, others not; some papers out, some still need to be written, some PhDs completed and others just beginning. We take the highs with the lows, let's see what 2026 brings...πŸŽ„πŸŽ…πŸŒ²

Congratulations to Dr Jude Krampah for passing his PhD viva today, it was great to be a part of this supervisory team. Jude's thesis explored the prognosic value of balance measurements and salivary biomarkers for declining cognition in older adults πŸ‘ πŸ™Œ .

I'm tuning into the International Research Culture Conference #IRCC25 online today. As a PCE pilot panel member, I'm looking forward to hearing the reflections by Steven Hill from Research England.

Great to see our work on RNA trans-splicing highlighted in the 2025 Ataxia UK Research Impact Report. Can't wait to update the field at ICAR2026 with the latest in-vivo data! You can access it here: www.ataxia.org.uk/research-new...

I do not understand these comments and the fact they come from UKRI is unsettling; the most impactful findings can come from the most unexpected places and that impact is often not realised until many years later. And these are the ppl who should be advocating for us!

After a spot of sunny sightseeing in Rotterdam, I've arrived in Tiel ready for the Dutch Neuroscience Meeting. Looking forward to connecting and learning from this great brain nation. I'll be kicking off the Thursday genetic therapies session with a talk on RNA trans-splicing 🧠

Yesterday our research centre for Physical Activity and Life Sciences (PALS) held its annual research symposium. Great range of talks/posters from diverse research on athlete safeguarding, green spaces, humans at 50Β°C: 50% humidity through to pharmaceuticals, gene therapy and biomarkers for disease

Thanks! Thankfully the university hires them for us, it's all quite easy we just have to register with the info on what uni/degree and sizes. Some do choose to own their own though but it's usually people with degrees from outside UK as often they can't source the correct combibations easily.

Tang et al. present a new deep learning tool, Spliformer, that can predict RNA splicing. Genome-wide analyses using this tool identified intronic variants driving RNA mis-splicing in ALS, while additional functional analyses pinpointed PCP4 as an ALS-associated gene. https://buff.ly/42rayiH
