When do we agree that Elm Row (and, really, the whole of Leith Walk) just needs to have all parking removed?

Reopening the South Sub: Have your say!
Background

The Edinburgh South Suburban Railway (South Sub) opened in 1884 as part of the Suburban Circle, serving Edinburgh’s southern suburbs. It had 7 stations, and passed through Gorgie, Craiglockhart, Morningside, Blackford Hill, Newington, Duddingston, and Portobello, with connections to Waverley, Haymarket, Abbeyhill, and Piershill. Passenger services were withdrawn in 1962, but the line continues to carry rail freight.

Project Description

Edinburgh and the Lothians are Scotland’s fastest-growing region, and traffic congestion in the city is among the worst in the UK, which is only going to worsen with a fast growing population. To help people move around more efficiently, reduce car use, and support sustainable growth, Edinburgh needs to explore mass transit options.

In 2025, Heriot-Watt masters students proposed the "South Sub Tram-Train," connecting directly to the Edinburgh tram network near Murrayfield Stadium and linking west to east Edinburgh through the city’s south, from Gorgie to Portobello. This would improve access to jobs, education, and healthcare, reduce car use, and support urban regeneration, similar to the benefits seen in Leith after previous tram extensions.

Reopening the South Sub is a cost-effective solution because much of the railway infrastructure already exists. This means lower construction costs and less disruption compared with building on-street tram lines.

The South Sub Tram-Train would offer a fast, reliable service largely unaffected by road congestion. There is also potential to connect at Cameron Toll to the North–South tram extension, providing direct travel from the South Sub to the BioQuarter and Royal Infirmary.

Some good news.

London is meeting legal limits for toxic NO2 pollution for the first time – almost 200 years earlier than predicted – following the Mayor’s "world leading air pollution policies," City Hall announces.

The Ultra Low Emissions Zone - and similar policies - really do work.

Yes, yes you are. Stop cosplaying "legitimate concerns". When you join a far right rally, organised by well known far right leader Tommy Robinson, with a host of speakers who outright say they are far right, you are a racist. No ifs, buts or maybes. There are no excuses for being there.

The temporary bike lanes and pedestrian buildouts are going to be made permanent in the North, East, West and City Centre areas. After the council’s subcommittee finally came to a decision

Ban 'no ball games' signs to get children off devices, play experts say Experts say outdoor play in England has declined by 50% and are calling for urgent change.

If you want kids off devices, get rid of the cars off their streets. Build more LTNs. Stop building car dependent sprawl. Kids want to play outside; it’s their parents who don’t let them because of subconscious (and understandable) fears about them being hit by drivers.

Mark Smith: The new motorway that Scotland doesn’t need Ash Regan of the Alba party has said that what we really need in Scotland is more roads, specifically a new motorway, but I have a message for Ash…

β€œβ€¦ more roads, therefore more cars, therefore more roads, therefore more cars…. The future isn’t what we thought it would be: it isn’t shiny and it isn’t efficient.”

Building a new motorway in Scotland is not the long term solution to traffic congestion.

For many decades, Freiburg has been expanding tram lines and bike paths, enlarging and beautifying pedestrian zones, optimizing traffic lights, and improving legal regulations.

These efforts have been a great success: 79% of all trips are made by bicycle, bus, train, or on footβ€”the best in Germany.

This video is an excellent resource to rationally explain the biases against transportation modes outside of cars.

It’s a great one to share with friends and family who might be open to a logical discussion about our current motoring environment and the changes we need to consider.

Extremely concerning answer to my question suggested by @spokeslothian.bsky.social at Edinburgh council meeting today on delays to active travel projects. Delays of 6-8 years common, some delays of 10-11 years.
