So when people insist “there are only two genders” or “gender is biological,” they’re not defending science — they’re ignoring history, psychology, linguistics, and lived reality.

DSM-5 (2013) shifted to Gender Dysphoria, recognizing that the problem isn’t identity — it’s the distress caused by a society that refuses to understand it.

He coined terms like “gender identity” and “gender role” to describe how someone feels and expresses themselves, regardless of the sex they were assigned at birth.

So no — gender ≠ sex.
👉 Sex is about anatomy.
👉 Gender is about identity, experience, and culture.

It wasn’t until the 1950s that psychologist John Money introduced “gender” into conversations about people — specifically to separate identity from biology.

The word “gender” goes way back — but not in the way some folks think.

Originally, it was a grammar term, used since the 1300s to describe nouns, not people. (Think: masculine/feminine words in French or Spanish.)
