Brian Kilmeade endorses euthanizing homeless people: "Involuntary lethal injection, or something. Just kill them."

I admire people who can still summon enough vigor to plead β€œhow many more children have to die?” when the answer is clear. I try not to let emotional resignation be civic resignation, but it’s hard. America has made it so.

Tough week to have a kid starting Pre-K

Hey, Some Thoughts About Billy Joel This is technically not a post about being a dad, but it is a post about Billy Joel, which still sort of makes it a post about being a dad

Where critics believe Billy Joel undermining his mean streak with earnestness makes him uncool, I think it’s his greatest strength.

Wrote about Billy Joel, being shaped by Long Island, and why his best song about New York isn't the one you think it is.

I didn't know I needed the new Billy Joel documentary NPR critic Linda Holmes has been a Billy Joel fan since the '80s. HBO's new two-part documentary still taught her something new about his life β€” and provided a chance to consider the role of his music...

(And shout to @lindaholmes.bsky.social’s great review of the documentary for sparking inspiration)

The CBT still doesn’t get stingy owners to suddenly spend or operate like they care about winning. There are small market teams like the Brewers and Rays who make best efforts every year, but then there also small market teams like the Pirates and A’s, who very much don’t

I fear the smaller divisions will lead to massive Strength of Schedule imbalance. You’re going to wind up with some divisions stacked with big market, free-spending teams that tend to be good every year, and some divisions with only bottom-feeders.

Yeah those were just two examples. Would love to have MLB back in Montreal!

I’ve seen a lot of kooky MLB realignment maps this week after Rob Manfred’s comments about expansion.

But hear me out: we don’t need new divisions, we need no divisions

The idea of the entirety of NYC retiring to Florida because the city self-immolated β€” without New Yorkers even realizing it because the city is always on fire β€” is timeless genius. Our president is a snowbird who wants to seize control of Democratic cities because of the myth that they're burning!

NYSOM is straightforward and melodic. It's easy to hear how pop culture has latched onto it.

But Miami 2017 is rockabilly dystopian satire that rings truer to a New York elitist ethos. "Oh you think the city is dying? Well fuck you then, we'll have the biggest, brightest death you've ever seen"

Been watching 'And So It Goes' and I've got a hot Billy Joel take: His greatest anthem about New York is not New York State of Mind. It is Miami 2017. And it's not particularly close.

Parenting: The Best Wellness Hack If you want a more stable, orderly life, have a kid

We need to build some real social stigma around being afraid of cities. You don't have to like them or live there, but a politics built this strongly around watching TV and going "ewww" is embarrassing, and people should be embarrassed by it. It's like "fear of werewolves" being your top issue.

Banana Ball is Not a Substitute for the Real Thing No one can doubt the Savannah Bananas' popularity, but let's not fool ourselves into thinking it's something else

Banana Ball is harmless and fun, but it’s not a replacement for the real thing. Those equivocating it with MLB as β€œdiversions” fail to understand that traditional sports fandom is not rooted in seeking entertainment. I don't watch the Mets to distract myself. I do it because they are who I am.

I'm tired of people saying pro sports need to be more like Banana Ball in order to survive, because my memories and the ones I'm creating for my son say otherwise.

The Mets didn't have strong attendance. Then Steve Cohen bought the team and followed through on making Citi Field cooler and building a perennial contender. Now the Mets have strong attendance.

MLB doesn't need to be a TikTok page that came to life, it needs team owners who give a shit!

The whole "MLB needs to be more like Banana Ball" discourse has driven me insane, because I've seen the blueprint for the last five years as a Mets fan and it's so simple. Just spend money to field a competitive roster and make the stadium experience good and affordable (that part still needs work)

Stephen Colbert was not fired for "financial reasons," unless of course you consider the Ellisons' decision to deplatform one of the president's strongest critics so he will approve their Paramount/Skydance merger a "financial" one.

When we enable private equity to hack up and destroy healthy traditional media, we become a country where billionaires can congeal these needlessly fractured assets into superconglomerates whose chief goal is to appease the autocrat who decides whether they can remain in the wealth hoarding business

The NBA is as deep as it's ever been, which may be as good for basketball fans as it is harmful for the league's mainstream salience. Dynasties may seem uninteresting at face value, but it's that lack of parity that has helped keep the league and its players popular.

Comparing rings is a very flawed way to measure individual career success, but playing in and winning Finals *does* matter with regards to mainstream popularity. Because we're finding out what happens without dynasties, when new faces show up on the casual fans' TVs every June.

The NBA is a league of dynasties and those dynasties have borne "faces." Bird, Magic, MJ, Shaq, Kobe, LeBron, Wade, KD, Steph. The league's crossover stars reached the mainstream because they were *there* every spring. If you didn't know anything about the NBA, you knew the guys lifting the trophy.

23.06.2025 16:01 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

We talk a lot about how LeBron, Steph and KD are still the faces of the NBA, and the existential problem the NBA has on its hands when they retire. We also talk a lot about the NBA's unprecedented current period of championship parity. But we don't talk about how the latter has impacted the former.

I recently had an undergrad message me for career advice. When I gave it, his response began β€œSure! Here’s a smoother version of that sentence.” He was apparently conversing with me through AI. There are probably many kids trying to break into media/marketing *not* doing this, but yeah, not great!
