The damage done by the current president of the USA is remarkable. We all guessed it would be bad, but this bad?!

We don't yet have great alternatives to USA social media, though I'm on Gander now.

So I currently can't remove social media completely. I deleted Twitter and Facebook long ago, so just this and Reddit right now.

I don't go and see USA movies. Or buy USA made food / fruits / veg.

You can't be 100% successful in doing this here in Canada, but I've been doing what I can.

I've not been on bluesky much, mostly because it is a USA platform and I've been moving everything USA out of my life. Due to the threats made against Canada by the current president, not because of Americans themselves.

We have a kinda-Reddit alternative, Lemmy, but the onboarding is not at all user-friendly & decentralising everything makes it all seem siloed.

What happened?

The vibe in England is weird.

England specifically is moving toward becoming a fascist country at an alarming speed. The media & politicians are forcing it that way.

I liked going back for a visit. I probably won't go again - and that makes me sad.

It will get better, in X years. Maybe five, maybe 10.

All politics swings left and right.

Left is always two steps forward. Right is always one step backwards.

All of this to say:

Things are going to get a lot worse in #England before they get better.

I'm so very glad I got out.

If you are queer, nb, & especially trans, seriously look at #emigrating. It's not cheap, easy or fast. I know, I did it, but start now if you have not already.

It was odd hearing from my family how they have stopped going to social groups (e.g. a book club) and have dropped friends, as they have adopted, and parrot, pro-fascist politics.

You can literally espouse fascism in public & not be embarrassed, or get yelled down at all times. Weird & not right.

The vibe has changed. England is moving quickly toward fascism, fuelled by the media & compliant politicians.

The latter should have kept the former in line, but that's not how it works in England. The media owns the politics.

The media, pushed by the USA and billionaire JKR swung right-wing.

I nearly said that TERF island is nice to your face - but that's not the case. A lot depends on who and where you are.

I'm older, I look as though I have money, and I moderately pass as a cis woman. I'm also white.

I can also navigate the country with confidence. I have many advantages.

I'm only talking about England & not Wales or Scotland. I know Wales well, but I don't know Scotland so well.

I only went back to England this time.

I was not harassed in the street. No-one said anything to me, or yelled, or gave me anything other than side-eye.

I went to TERF island - and I survived.

It's pretty interesting how the vibe of #England has changed from when I was last there, over a decade ago.

I lived in the UK for decades, I know it well, but having lived in Canada for so long now, I have a different perspective on England.
