I can't think of a more perfect way to sum up what is happening in all corners of life + politics in the late-stage capitalist oligarchy hellscape that is the United States:

Some kids grew out of their childhood obsessions. I didnβt.
A geologist gave me a VHS tape about Mount St. Helens in the early β90s, and that was it. Books followed. Posters. More tapes. A lifetime of quiet research.
Here's a brief intro to...me!
Group of seven people, including Harry Truman and members of the Kaseweter and Pullen families, stand talking near the Skamania/Cowlitz Red Zone roadblock. A young boy in red and white turns to face the camera. βROAD CLOSEDβ barricades and a closed gate are visible behind them. Photo by Connie Pullen. May 17, 1980.

Five-year-old Chris Pullen stands outside with a mountainous valley in the background. He holds several stamped envelopes addressed from Mount St. Helens Lodge, one visible with βCastle Rock authoritiesβ written on the front. Photo by Connie Pullen. May 17, 1980.

A warm spring Saturday.
The Kaseweters/Pullens are waved through when they spot a deer, an elk, and a coyoteβall standing still, staring at the volcano.
Later, they meet Harry Truman at the inner gate. Truman gives young Chris Pullen letters to mail
#MSH45 | Night
The gate on Spirit Lake Highway is locked. The mountain stands silent in the dark.
Across the valleys and ridges, a few people settle in for the nightβsome returning home, others camping closer. Small choices. Nothing feels urgent.
Yet, they will mean everything.

Before May 18, there were 60 days of warning signsβearthquakes, ash bursts, and a growing bulge on the mountainβs north flank.
If you're just catching up, hereβs the story of Mount St. Helens in 1980βup to todayβcondensed into two minutes.
Photograph of Mount St. Helens taken by Gary Rosenquist on the morning of May 18, 1980, moments before the eruption began. The volcanoβs north flank shows signs of stress, including the growing bulge. The summit crater appears quiet under a pale sky, with dense forest in the foreground. Enhancement by Steve Rosenow.
Aerial view of Spirit and St. Helens Lakes nestled among dense forest and mountainous terrain north of Mount St. Helens. Snow patches dot the surrounding ridges under soft morning light. This image was taken by Keith and Dorothy Stoffel during their May 18, 1980, overflight, shortly before the eruption. Source: Stoffel collection.
The watchers watch.
Dave Johnston, Reid Blackburn, Gerry Martin, Ty and Marianna Kearneyβdozens more with cameras and notebooks, each fixed on the volcano.
At the foot of the mountain, Harry Truman is in his lodge.
A quiet, peaceful Sunday morning. A day of rest.
Leslie and Dale Davis sit on a floral-patterned couch in their Mossyrock home, sharing memories of the morning of May 18, 1980. A crocheted afghan rests on the couch behind them. A side table, lamp, and potted plant complete the cozy living room setting. Interview still. Source unknown.
Photograph taken from a vehicle windshield showing a winding road through dense forest. The hood of the red truck is visible in the foreground. Captured moments before the eruption on May 18, 1980, this image was taken by Dale Davis before spotting an albino deer northwest of Mount St. Helens. Photo courtesy of Dale Davis.
Elsewhere, all within unrestricted lands, people go about their lives. Elk Rock. South Fork Toutle. Green River. Spud Mountain.
The Davises of Mossyrock, joined by Al Brooks, explore the Weyco lands NW of the peak.
Theyβre bound for an old lookoutβbut stop when an albino deer crosses their path.

The rising sun bathes Mount St. Helens in soft light.
Some are awake, such as photographer Gary Rosenquist at Bear Meadow.
At Coldwater II, David Johnston radios Bob Christensen back in Vancouver, reporting clear skies, brisk air, and no sign of sulfur gas.
Aerial view of Mount St. Helens taken the morning of May 18, 1980, by Keith and Dorothy Stoffel. The image looks north across the summit, showing the volcanoβs fractured and snow-dusted slopes. Deep channels and debris patterns are visible along the flanks. The scene is calm, with layered ridges fading into the background under soft morning light. Captured shortly before the eruption.
#MSH45 | 8:25 a.m.
The mountain has given signs for weeks.
At this moment, it holds steady. But not for long.
#MSH45 | 8:32 a.m.
The ground shudders. A M5.1 quake hits beneath Mount St. Helens.
The bulge collapses outward.
Within seconds, a lateral blast surges through the disintegrating slope.
7 miles north, Gerry Martin describes what he seesβuntil the radio goes silent.
#MSH45 | Charlieβs Story
Those who can escape have seconds. No time to wait.
Just 8 miles west of the summit, Charlie McNerney and John Smart race from their campsite on the North Fork Toutle.
They barrel down logging roads and Spirit Lake Highwayβ
the closest known survivors on the north side.
#MSH45 | βA Big Black Cloudβ
Unless you were near the mountain, the first sign was the sky.
A towering black mushroom cloud rising fast.
