So, hivemind...tell me about where you live. Do you like it? How's the cost of living? Are there any jobs (preferably in higher ed, but I know it doesn't pay to be too nice about that right now).

I'm interested in opportunities to go somewhere new, assuming we can support ourselves and ensure options for a good high school experience. If I had my druthers, we'd go to Ireland or the UK, but that's a wish more than a possibility.

We have the option to return to my childhood home in NC, which tempts because that means no rent, and it would be kinda cool to see my daughter go to the same high school I did (when I was in high school, I was certain I'd never want kids at all, lol)

My advisor told me, amongst other things, that the absolutely shit state of the job market might make this the best time to do something new and just pick a place that we want to live, since getting a job is equally impossible anywhere.

My advisor described my work as having a "gossipy curiosity" vibe, and I kinda love that.

Why am I now, in the final full semester of my dissertation, deciding that I should be doing history instead of literature??

I hate it here lol

Hive-mind: with the job market being the garbage fire that it is, how does one go about getting into a new line of work in this day and age? If employers don't even seem to want to hire qualified, experienced people, how do you then convince someone to hire you for a job you HAVEN'T done before?

jpagaduanauthor 8h I have been told often that posting my fanfic on my author social media accounts is unprofessional. But I simply don't give a fuck. Fanfic is a legitimate sub-genre of literature, and I am proud to be a fanfic author. I am not ashamed to say I am a fanfic writer and stake my professional brand on that. Besides, I take my fanfic just as seriously as my original stuff. And if that is off-putting to you? 🤷🏾‍♂️ Then take your business elsewhere, friend. the hate against fanfic is wild to me. For one thing, it's hardly a new invention. What do you think Dante's Inferno is?

I actually had a discussion about this yesterday. The hate for fanfiction has 4 components:

1) It directly defies capitalism. Capitalism tells us that only things that are profitable are of worth. Most fanfic is free and so people equate free to bad. 🧵 #fanfiction

Hot take: no adult is owed a relationship of any sort by any other adult, and if someone chooses to end a relationship/friendship/acquaintance/whatever...they are allowed to do so. Even if you don't like it. Even if you don't want them to. Even if you think they're wrong.

I told you all that to tell you this. The SBC, whose official position is that I could never be an ordained minister even if I wanted because 5000 years ago, Eve made a bad choice...also asserts that [male] pastors accused (and even guilty of) sexual misconduct should be allowed to stay in power...

They passed a resolution in 1984 to that effect, and by 2000, they refused to allow the ordination of women by any SBC member, nor would they allow churches with women pastors to be in communion with the SBC. I grew up thinking that's how all churches were, and when I learned otherwise, I was amazed

That is, a very literal separate but equal policy in which men and women are designed by God to have different strengths and roles. As part of that, the SBC maintains that because Adam was created first while Eve sinned first, it is biblically impermissible for women to become ordained ministers.

Many of you may be unaware of this, but I was raised in the Southern Baptist Church. I grew up in an environment where women were not allowed to preach, lead mixed-sex discussions/lessons, or hold any sort of authority over men. The official position of the SBC is one of complementarianism.
