So, not only is the Italian Defence Minister stranded in Dubai, having travelled there without informing the PM or anyone else, including the security services, but the Rome Chief of Police is also stuck there. They were both there for "personal" reasons.

Investigations by Public Prosecutors in Crotone lead to the indictment of 4 Guardia di Finanza officers and 2 Coast Guard officers in July 2025 on charges of multiple manslaughter as they failed to activate search and rescue operations. The trial began on 30th January 2026. //

The Guardia di Finanza and Coast Guard depend on different Ministries: GdF depends on the Interior Ministry (Piantedosi) in this context (on the Finance Ministry in others); the Coast Guard depends on the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructures (Salvini). Clearly, something doesn't work >> 13

The Coast Guard certainly knw what is happening, as they are informed from the outset. Some reports say GdF requests a joint operation after their initial failed attempt but nothing happens. The Coast Guard only intervene at 4.30 a.m. after reports of the shipwreck >> 12

After hitting the rocks, with water pouring into the hold and the boat listing heavily, the migrants force their way up onto deck and see the crew fleeing on an inflatable dinghy. Many are trapped inside the hold and never manage to get out before the boat starts to break up >> 11

About an hour before the shipwreck, one of the crew comes down into the hold to tell the migrants to prepare their belongings as they will soon be arriving. Shortly before the boat hits rocks the engine starts to smoke and there is a strong smell of burnt oil, causing panic among the migrants >> 10

Yet, the Minister says the weather was good. Maybe, it is in the area where the boat is spotted. Indeed, the Frontex plane makes no mention of poor conditions. However, if GdF boats are forced to return, it is clear a heavily overloaded wooden boat is heading into poor weather >> 9

As a "law & enforcement" operation, it is the Guardia di Finanza that intervenes, rather than the Coast Guard. A launch and a patrol boat are sent out to intercept the boat but are forced to return because the heavy seas endanger the crew >> 8
