Kerry is climbing through a window with one leg in and one leg out. She is wearing all black with a beanie and sunglasses and has long brown hair. One hand is holding a lit flashlight and the other is propping up the window pane. The background outside the window is lots of green grass and trees.
The cover of the book Finlay Donovan Crosses the Line. The background is a light purple/lavender color, with an illustration of a light skinned woman with long brown hair biting her lower lip and wearing all black climbing through a window with a lit flashlight in one hand and the other propping up the window pane. Outside the window is dark with a tree in the background and stars in the sky. The author's name, Elle Cosimano is at the top in a bright turquoise, followed by part of the title, Finlay Donovan, in dark blue/purple below, and the rest of the title, Crosses the Line, in white text.
I forgot about this platform for a while, but I posted something fun on my bookstagram today that I'll share here too.

Each month is different, just depending on which books I'm reading, which genres, if it's available on Libby, & how busy I am. In Jan I read 11 books, & while none were fully on audio, some I supplemented with audio while driving, chores, etc. Feb 9 books, 1 full audio. March 3 so far, all audio.

It also simultaneously provides beauty & hope.
This structure is intentional & cleverly written. Apparitions displays fantastic writing in a dark, powerfully sad, fascinating story. Highly recommend. & DO NOT skip the author's note at the start. It puts everything into perspective.

As an ASL Interpreter, I know the damaging effects of language deprivation on Deaf folks. In Apparitions, Pottle not only shows us this but also plants us into the story with the narrator, overwhelming us with his experiences and feelings. It's dark, claustrophobic, and induces anxiety and dread.

While this is a horror story (and some parts are absolutely disturbing and difficult to read), it is also an important, powerful example of another type of horror: language deprivation.

After years of brutal abuse, a Deaf teen escapes his father's basement. Bruised, alone, & deprived of language, he is lost until he finds himself in an isolated psychiatric facility. He meets another Deaf teen, Felix, who teaches him Sign Language. But he overlooks the dangers of Felix's growing ego
