We're recruiting 2 PhD candidates in human geography here in Uppsala, one position focused on urban/housing issues and one in political ecology.
Please spread the word/repost etc. Being a PhD student in Sweden is a good gig.
Countries' carbon dioxide removal plans pose substantial threats to biodiversity, new research reveals.
Analysis by the scientists shows that up to 13% of global areas of high biodiversity importance are allocated for land-intensive CDR deployment. π§΅

So the new paperβ¦
βfinds that immigration economics is identical to other fields of empirical inquiry: researcher priors correlate with results
βfinds that the magnitude of this correlation is minuscule
βdoes not mention the most prominent documented bias of this kind, from one of the authors.
A new paper by George Borjasβwho served this past year in the Trump White House designing some of its anti-immigration policiesβclaims to display evidence of ideological bias among researchers who study immigration.

Give the paper a read if you are interested. I am very happy with it because it's a truly interdisciplinary effort (combining planning, urban geography and industrial ecology) and because it links my housing expertise to climate change

Our findings show that the GHG emissions of the highest income groups are higher despite their ability to install solar panels, heat pumps, insulation etc.
This is mostly an outcome of their more suburban residential patterns, increasing car dependency. This drives GHG emissions

We (Federico Savini, Mira Kopp, Leshem Cohen, Peter Berrill, Stefano Merciai and I) study inequalities in housing-related greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in the Netherlands.
We combine full-population registers, mobility surveys and life cycle inventory data

A recent study by Dutch colleagues shows that a shutdown of the Atlantic overturning circulation #AMOC could bring extreme drought to Europe for centuries.
That is a thus far underappreciated risk of climate change.

Fossil-fuel extraction massively outweighs critical mineral mining needs (quite literally)
β We dig up tens of billions of tonnes of stuff every year to produce coal, oil & gas
βΒ Raw-material extraction for critical minerals would be a fraction of that, even under net-zero

Africaβs forests have joined the Brazilian Amazon and Australian forests in becoming carbon sources rather than sinks. Around 2010 the previous storage of our carbon emissions flipped, mainly through deforestation and degradation.
