The guard dog story is wonderful. And I dare you not to laugh while reading the Bryson. But why two copies of the Sun Tsu? Are they different?

Another way I heard this recently: they don’t want to make anything better. They just can’t stand the way it is.

A bright yellow baby pineapple growing from mature pineapple fronds in a large pot

When our kids were small, we did a science project, rooting the top of a grocery pineapple in water, then planting it in dirt. We got years of thriving greens, and then a baby pineapple! We rooted the top of of that -- and so on and so on. In short: We are the finest pineapple farmers in Roswell, GA

I always say that it’s as if both directors worked from the same prompt. One made a borderline horror film. The other, a romance.

Hands down, this one. And I amp it to 11 if shown as a double feature with The Prestige.

The government's attacks on diversity, equity and inclusion are making me feel grateful that my high school taught Kurt Vonnegut's collection, Welcome to the Monkey House, which included the story, "Harrison Bergeron." which for some reason is top of mind right now.

Nineteen and Eleven Corey-Jan Albert Β· Water and Wind Β· Song Β· 2023

114 years ago today, 129 women and 17 men, mostly Jewish immigrants, perished in a disastrous fire at the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory in NYC. I wrote this song imagining the perspective of someone who would have had reason to be nearby when these events happened.

This is what I've been saying about the resignations anywhere/everywhere as a response to his actions. It clears the path for him. And it's terrifying.

Sonnet against a wood dinner table. Sonnet reads: "I’ve heard that if you say a phrase too much,
it wears thin, loses strength, becomes dilute,
until it’s meaningless, a flimsy crutch,
a placeholder or cheat, but I refute

such nonsense. Sometimes more is more. It’s why
we say those three words lavishly, with wild
abandon, caution to the wind, a high
expression of our spirits so beguiled

by rediscovering enduring charms,
by laughter over words that should exist,
by simply nestling in each other’s arms,
by finding gems that somehow we had missed,

And ever, always, gratitude runs through
these years, days, moments saying, β€œI love you.”"

My husband and I have a longstanding tradition of writing mushy notes to each other for birthdays, anniversaries, holidays, etc. This is mine to him for this past Valentines Day.

Woke up to see this beauty on the eaves near our front door. I could muse on the symbolism. But this morning, I prefer to simply be in awe.

The whole thing was amazing -- especially Questlove's mashups of multiple performances that I'd never imagine in the same era, let alone the same room -- and he made them seem like they were always there together, making their individual songs shine together. Wow.

Sonnet on a dark sky background:
It started thirteen years ago today:
This bright, intense, sweet, energetic whirl
flew radiant into our lives. To say
that you’re a β€œforce of nature” kind of girl
was obvious, clear from the start. Yes, you
have always been just who you were. You feel
intensely, live in brilliant colors, DO
when others might just wish, expressing real
ideas and true emotions, unafraid
to be yourself. We love your vibrant spirit
your creativity, insights conveyed
through words and art, out loud so all can hear it
or whispered for your soul. Something, we knew,
had burst into our lives. Maxxe, it was you.

I wrote this sonnet for my daughter when she turned 13. Now it has been 13 more years but you can see -- we always knew who she would be.
