If the goal is secure elections, OK already has tools to verify eligibility and noncitizen voting is already a felony. These bills read like a solution in search of a problem and risks blocking real voters while feeding the myth that elections are overrun with fraud.

SB 1667 also creates a “federal-only voter” category for people whose citizenship can’t be verified through the process: they’d be limited to federal races and pushed into provisional-ballot hoops unless they produce documents on a deadline.

These proposals require documentary proof of U.S. citizenship to register (birth certificate, passport, etc.). And OK SB 1667 goes further by explicitly requiring legal documentation for name changes, meaning married women & anyone who changed their name are more likely to hit paperwork problems.

The federal SAVE Act and Oklahoma SB 1667 are being sold as 'election security'. They target a 'problem' that’s already illegal and vanishingly rare; according to the Heritage Foundation (Project 2025 authors) the incidence of proven noncitizen voting is negligible, below 0.0001%.
